I tried to connect my hdd to the Wii U with that USB Mini B cable but it was doing a constant clicking noise, and the console couldn't see it.
So, I heard that you might need a Y cable because the Wii U doesn't give enough power to the USB ports, then I remembered that my hdd had another circular port (I don't know the name of that type of port/cable I'm sorry lol), so I started looking for the cable I needed and after finding it I connected it to the Wii U. When I booted up the Wii U, it asked me if I wanted to format the hdd, perfect! But it failed to do that apparently, so I tried to switch the cables and then I turned off the Wii U. When I booted it up I got no message, so I turned it off (again) and then back on (again), that time I got the message and I managed to format it correctly and it's showing up in the settings too. Perfect I guess?
So, was all that just "normal" and from now it'll work fine or could I run into some problems later on?
(Sorry for the long post, but all of that left me a bit confused lmao)

the wiiU has its moments where if you treat it like a modern computer it reminds you that it’s just a console. I think you just experienced one of those moments.

also, in these pics we cant tell if you’re plugging the HDD into back ports or the front ports.

    3. going to be real, I have no fucking clue what the hell this picture is of.

But yes, you need a y cable, otherwise the external drive being connected will not get enough power and won’t function correctly. My External Drive is plugged in on the front and plugs the Y cable into the 2 usb ports so it gets enough power.

Just Buy a Y cable. Make sure the other end plugs into your drive though, might have to double check what that end is called.

I also use a hard drive with an external power supply (it just takes up one of the ports on my switch dock) and in that case you don’t need a Y cable, since the power supply is covered sufficiently. A single usb connection then should do fine!
