Doom: The Dark Ages is introducing big changes to combat because id Software came to one core realization: “Every projectile mattered in the original Doom”

Good, I didn’t enjoy Doom 2016 for its combat and I outright hated Eternal. It was a fun game, but it wasn’t Doom. The trailer for Dark Ages gives me full Doom 2 vibes. And that’s a very good thing.

    2. As someone who loves all of the Doom games from the original to 2016 more than I did Doom Eternal, they’ve been saying a lot of the right things to my ears.

I liked Eternal. But it was too much for my old brain and my old reflexes. There was a lot to think about and a lot to manage and nearly all combat was funneled into arenas. I beat it, but it was exhausting and it isn’t a game I have any interest in revisiting.

I might be in the minority, I’m not sure. Either way, going back to take inspiration from the older games has gotten me more hyped for this one.

    3. Thank fuck. I definitely prefer the combat he’s describing to what we had in Eternal. 1, 2, and 2016 are peak DOOM for me.

    4. I don’t mind this, so long as id continues the execution on their plans. Over the past decade, I cannot think of any FPS (or much of any game) that has managed to present its ideas and execute as well on them as Doom’s campaigns. I thought the 2016 game was good. I thought Eternal’s changes were amazing. It sounds like The Dark Ages will provide an intentionally different experience, but it is still exciting.

On place I’d contrast id’s idea is Gears of War. I loved the first, liked the second, and was a bit done with it by the third. They did their thing well, but Epic was kind of doing the same thing over and over. Doom, much like Halo in its glory days, has excelled at giving each game an identity that stands on its own merits. I trust id wholly to make a good game according to their plans.

My one criticism for them is the multiplayer. I didn’t care for the loadout-based 2016 multiplayer at all. I tried it for a while, but as someone who was tired of CoD, Doom’s accepting of a core CoD influence didn’t fit an arena shooter. As for Eternal, the multiplayer mode never intrigued me, so I never even touched it. What id should do, at least to make me happy, is give us a REAL old school arena shooter experience. Give us Quake Champions without the “Champions.”

    5. As long as it gets away from Eternals game style and goes back to traditional Doom/Quake style gameplay. I think Eternal is a great game, just not a great Doom game.

Ideally I want a mix of Doom and Quake with every level just being a slaughter map with lots of secrets like 2016 and eternal had to collect.

Weapon mods being collectibles like they were in the past two games is fine, but the stupid upgrade challenges need to go.

Also mp needs to be more like previous Dooms, ideally more like Quake. Battlemode can be an extra thing but should not be the focus or sole mode like in eternal.
