I've always thought that the library of games on NSO has some unique games in it that are great to have access to but I'd never consider buying them individually, so I like the subscription model, but I've wondered which ones I'd actually drop any money on.

For the sake of this discussion, please stick to the currently available library of games on NSO. I'm not interested in hearing about what games you think aren't there and should be. Stick to what we already have.

Also for the sake of this discussion let's assume the pricing structure is similar to what it was on previous consoles.

    • NES/GB/GBC – $5
    • SNES/GBA/Genesis/Mega Drive – $8
    • N64 – $10

    1. Most of the GBA and N64 games. The Oracle Zelda games, Some SNES RPGs would be high on my list

First implement a genuine account system so my purchases for Wii and 3DS followed me to new systems within the Nintendo ecosystem, then we’ll talk.

All the Metroid and Zeldas for sure + the Mario Advance games, Fire Emblem, Golden Sun, GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, F-Zero X, Killer Instinct, the Game Boy Mega Man games and Star Fox 64

Probably just the Marios and Zeldas, although I’d be hesitant to buy them again having already bought them in the past.

There are quite a few games that I’ve played and enjoyed on NSO that I’d have never even considered had I had to pay for them individually so to me a subscription is a much better service

I would love nothing more than to be able to do that. The Wii and Wii U had that but those consoles aren’t portable and most older games look better on a smaller screen compared to a big modern tv.

Anyways, I’d buy several N64 games like Mario 64, Zelda OoT/MM, DK 64, Banjo Kazooie, Turok, and some others.

On SNES, I’d buy SMW, Zelda ALttP, Super Metroid, Castlevania IV and any classic jrpgs that would be on sale.

There’s a ton of GBA games I’d buy too and DS/3DS if they ever add those.

    6. I don’t have the upgrade and am so close to getting it for PM64. If I could pay $10 to just have it on the console, I’d do it in a heartbeat. Others include DKC and DKC2.

    7. I gotta say I do like the library/subscription model just because I can try games I wouldn’t otherwise have heard of. There’s been some that have been great and some have not lived up to the nostalgia 🤣

I do think there should be an option to buy them individually too though.

Maybe there could be a discount if you’re already an NSO subscriber kinda like how PS+ has exclusive discounts for subscribers. Most of the folks interested in retro games tend to be older and have more disposable income.

    8. Not as much as I’d bought on Wii and WiiU back in the day for sure. But I’d definitely pick up:
      – Dr. Mario (NES)
      – Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)
      – Mario’s Super Picross (Super NES)
      – Donkey Kong Country 1, 2, 3 (Super NES)
      – Dr. Mario 64 (N64)
      – Banjo Kazooie (N64)
      – Pokémon Snap (N64)
      – Pokémon Stadium (N64)
      – Mario Party 2 (N64)
      – Mario Party 3 (N64)

About $100 of my math is right, which I guess means two years of NSO+Expansion has paid for itself.

    9. Individually no. If they were to release each platform as a collection sure (N64 Collection, GBA collection, etc). TBH I’m surprised they haven’t done this for NES and SNES since those libraries on NSO are presumably complete.

I would say that I wish my VC titles transferred over from previous systems. It would suck having to rebuy games I’ve already bought once before on 3DS.

Having the first two Paper Mario owned on the Switch would be a dream. Halfway there…

    12. RequiemStorm on

Honestly almost all of them. I really do make an effort to play them often and have found myself enjoying about 90% of the offerings on NSO

$5US for an NES game is hella overpriced! For reference, look at the classic games prices on PlayStation store, they’re from like $4-$12 each. NES games, IMO, should be like a buck or two, SNES games ~$3-$5, and N64 maybe $6 or $7. $5 for a game like City Connection or basically anything beyond the best-in-class games (and even then…) is insane.

I already bought the vc games I wanted on the Wii, and then the Wii U… And even a few on the 3DS. I didn’t mind having the subscription service if the other option is to buy them all again.

I’m ready for them to start ordering GCN and Wii games. I’ve played those NES and SNES games to death over the last… However many years

    15. Just the Metroid games. I’ve enjoyed a handful of others, but those would be the only ones I’d feel compelled to own.

    16. xxProjectJxx on

A few. The thing is, I’ve been hoarding games a long time. Between the carts I still own, and the games I still have for the Wii and Wii U virtual console, there aren’t too many left I’d be interested in, but here’s a few.

      NES:
      – Journey to Silius
      – Xevious
      – Gradius

      SNES:
      – Super Mario Kart
      – Battletoads in Battlemaniacs
      – Kirby’s Avalanche

      Gameboy:
      – Mario Land 2
      – Zelda Oracle of Ages/Seasons

      N64:
      – Dr Mario 64
      – Mario Party 1
      – Jet Force Gemini

      Genesis:
      – Comix Zone
      – Sonic Spinball
