      Some extra clarifications:

      1. I am not listing console iterations that are identical to the base system in terms of compatibility (DS lite, GBA SP, etc.)
      2. For VC and NSO I am listing Nintendo consoles only.
      3. The eShop for Wii, Wii U, DSi and 3DS is largely defunct and you can no longer buy new VC games. However, the transfer tools for Wii -> Wii U and DSi -> 3DS transfers ARE still available and functional.
      4. Ports/Remasters are not considered

Explanation for the category ‘compatible under specific circumstances’:

      1. Certain Gameboy Colour games are compatible with the original Gameboy
      2. The mainline Pokémon games on GB/GBC (Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal) are playable on N64 through the Transfer Pak and Pokémon Stadium (2)
      3. Certain Gameboy Advance games were made available for free to early adopters of the 3DS. This was the only way to obtain those GBA games on 3DS.
      4. Wii VC games transferred to Wii U are available in the system’s Wii Mode. If a VC game in Wii Mode was also available through Wii U VC, you could ‘transfer’ the VC game to Wii U by buying the game on Wii U VC at a greatly discounted price.
