Blessing Plays the Donkey Kong Bananza DLC!

Is it even 10:00 a.m. yet? It’s not even 10 a.m. yet. It is 9:53, but I am here with some DK Bonanza because earlier today I woke up at 5:00 a.m. We all joined here at 6:00 a.m. for Nintendo Direct. And at that Nintendo Direct, they announced DK Bonanza has gotten DLC available today, which I’m very excited for. Of course, if you live watched that direct along with us, uh you would have seen that they showed off DK Isle. They showed off a new mode, uh a rogite mode. And if you know me, you know I love rogue lights and I love DK and I love DK64 and DK Island. All that stuff is jam-packed into this DLC for you. Uh, I’m not going to waste any time. We’re getting right into this. Actually, we’re not cuz I think my controller’s off. Oh, [Music] here we go. Now, they just automatically put me into the DK paint thing. Chat, how you guys doing? All could have just been press been a release of trailers. There are some things in there that are really good though. I think there are enough highs to where it should have been a direct I’m not I’m not on that level yet where I’m like, “Oh, that could have been a blog.” And Hades 2, even getting a release date alone is [ __ ] hype. Yeah, Lar Brandon says 7.5, which is what I gave it. I gave it a 7.5 on our 10point scale for how I felt about the the Nintendo Direct lore accurate. You know, you you never know with Nintendo. It’s like, is all of a sudden is DK Island going to be close to the core? Is going to be part of sub layer 0.5? Oh my god, the music. Oh my god. This is where you’re from, DK. This island is beautiful chat. When I was at PAX, when I went to PAX, it’s of course it’s impossible to go to a con like that and not want to spend money because they have so many vendors that are selling so many cool things. At PAX, they had a there was a music vendor that was selling um CDs and vinyls. And one of the ones I got was it’s called Rare Treats DK64, I think re-imagined. Basically, Grant Kirk Hope, who is the composer for DK64, made a a remix slash like remaster album of the DK64 soundtrack where he took all the songs, including this one that you’re hearing right now, and um reimagined them with more of an orchestral, modern orchestral uh quality. You got this. So, I bought that CD. I was listening to it. Um, on the way home and back, I went home to grab my Switch for the stream, but I was blasting that [ __ ] Here we go. Damn, I already forgot I need to be clapping. [Music] Yeah, he tailor versioned the DK64 soundtrack. That’s a really good way of putting it. And we’re back. Bless, please give us a statement as official commissioner. Will this DLC be eligible for a bid in your Fenix Critic? No, because it’s out today. Um, DLC’s are eligible usually. Really the answer is whatever the settings are. Whatever settings I set at the beginning of the year are the rules. Uh but traditionally, if I recall that correctly, DLC’s are eligible. However, a game that is already out is not eligible. So, this will not be be there unless somebody got to it early. Unless somebody predicted that there would be DLC for this game and had already bid for it. No. [Music] Man, this is crazy. This brings me back. I have so much nostalgia for TK64. And so I think that’s what the thing that that’s what the bang for your buck is, which we’ll see if it’s the bang for the buck. You know, $20 for DLC. I expect something that’s meaty. And they get kind of detailed here. More emerald ore will appear after defeating an enemy while your health is full. More emerald will be earned after you clear one of void’s goals. More emerald geysers will occur when opening treasure chests. We’re going to go for that middle one. I like stuff that is passive that I don’t really need to think about too hard. More emerald. So, I just I just need to know that I got to go after those goals. So each of those are going to be a choice. [Music] Really like this music. Where? We got a skill back. More emerald or Oh, interesting. After defeating an enemy based on the number of skills you’ve unlocked, bless in rogues, do you do you like specking into an extra choice or prefer rerolls? I like if I can increase the amount of choices I’m making. For me, that seems more optimal. Like if I can any if I’m ever given the choice to make more XP in real time or be able to make more choices in real time, that’s usually going to be where I lean. [Applause] I will say this is a the amount of choices I’ve already had to make for like these upgrades is a lot, but at least it looks like they don’t change over time, right? They’re giving you the the same three ones, but they’re just adding more and more to them as you go. Uh, more [Music] [Music] Oh, interesting. It’s a lot. like it’s very fast-paced and there’s a lot of stop and go with how they deal out the the upgrades. I think the stop and go is the only part that I don’t love. Um, but it’s a really interesting and unique unique idea to do this with DK Bonanza. Where do I want to go with this? I guess. Yeah, let’s go after the banana gy. What? Right. Why not? Although, I’m pretty sure I’m well over the quota. I knew we could do it. My big critique with this mode so far is that it seems way too easy. But I wonder if that’s a thing that’s going to um toughen up with the other levels once I start going through the other layers cuz this seems really easy. Like I’m pretty sure I hit my total quota in round one. Where are we going? Why can’t I see the next goal? Maybe it’s not up yet. I can lobby gag. I don’t need to go after the goals. Okay. to pause here, right? How did I like that mode? Um, after playing it for just one one run, it’s fine. And granted, I think what’s going to what I think where the judgment is going to set in for real, like where the critique is going to set in for real is playing it on higher difficulties. Cuz my immediate reaction is a lot of stop and go for the upgrades, right? every single time I’m I’m hitting a new banana or I’m hitting a fossil or like a major collectible. Now, now you’re giving me a decision to make with the three choices. And that’s just happening way too rapidly. Way too rapidly. And um very quickly into this, I I realized I didn’t really need to think about the choices I was making because and I think that’s just the ease of it, right? Like we’ll we’ll see how it fares on higher difficulties. But I think the quick stop and go of that mixed with how mindless I kind of needed to be with it made a lot of the actual rog light elements not matter uh in the run. And so for a first impression, not great for like the core system of it, but it’s still DK Bonanza. And so it is fun to run around and do objectives and just smash [ __ ] you know? Like that last round, round six was just me going and like breaking [ __ ] And at the end of the day, there’s an inherent fun, you know, when you’re in the rage room of DK Bonanza and you’re just breaking the gold or you’re breaking the material and you’re smashing everything. That’s inherently fun. And so, like, giving me more of giving me another reason to do that, I’m always in for. I’m always here for. But if I’m like, if I’m doing the thing of like, you know, first blush, first impression, not great. But also, I think there’s a lot of room for it to be more fun once I try a higher difficulty. New layer unlocked. Oh, I see. So, I’m unlocking it in the new layers. So, I’m going to That was the canyon layer chat. New emerald perks unlocked. Okay. So, I’m unlocking new perks as I go as well. I like I see I like this. I like getting the new perks that I’m going to use for the future runs. Yeah, Miles Per knockout says just wait till you do difficulty three. That’s when it gets fun. I wish I could just do that right now. I wish they started I wish I understand kids game. I can’t even I can’t even complain too much about it. It’s a kids game, right? I do wish they started at like a slightly not even slightly at a more difficult level. Rogue lights are meant are meant to be hard. But I get it. It’s Nintendo. You want to balance it. You want to make it approachable. People are You’re spending $20 for this in a kids game. You want your kids to be able to play it. Nice work. I can’t complain about that. Also, man, this music does it for me every single time. Yeah. Like Shadow Trixie says, “This was the tutorial.” Which it kind of gave it that. It had that vibe. Did you say chips? That’s the Nintendo’s such an interesting company because I and I get it, right? like they don’t want to lean too hard into lore in their games because they don’t want to over complicate things and they want every they want any game or any like title in a series to be an entry point for people, right? Cuz it’s all it’s all made for kids. They don’t want anybody to feel excluded and they don’t also don’t want people to take it too seriously because they don’t want to lose people. But at the same time, they then will choose to reference the most old thing with such reverence. And I’m like, my this 10-year-old doesn’t know the original arcade Donkey Kong. You know, they balance that so interestingly. Oh, I see what I’m doing. [Music] Hurry. God, breaking gold in this game makes this game chug. [Music] It’s crazy how much breaking the gold material will make this game [ __ ] chug. And Nintendo was like, “Let’s make the game about that. Let’s make a game about smashing gold, where smashing gold is going to be the thing that really pushes this console to the limit. [Music] It is very satisfying. And that’s the thing is like I’m not even complaining about the chugging cuz it kind of brings me back to like in an old school game when you do like a thing that has like a lot of [ __ ] happening on screen and like the game’s like it feels like Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 at the end with the train where he’s like trying to keep it all together and he’s like [ __ ] it I’m doing my best. I’m Spider-Man type [ __ ] That’s what this that’s what this console feels like sometimes where like I’m doing I’m breaking everything and the console’s like you’re trying to break me. Whenever I [ __ ] like when I realize like, oh, this [ __ ] takes skill, that then activates me to be like, actually, you know what? Hell yeah. Let’s go. Um, but after that second round of playing, first round I was very like cold on it. That round I had a lot of fun. I think what helped with it is the canyon level is a lot more difficult to navigate around, which does add a a bigger layer of difficulty and strategy, pun intended. Um, so having to figure out like, okay, Void Kong’s goal is over there, so I need to like make my way there while also not wasting a bunch of time and like get getting the emerald material. Really fun. This is actually a really unique and like pretty well thoughtout mode. Um, I would I would like to try this mode on other levels. I think this is actually pretty pretty cool. Um, and so shout out. I paid $20 for the DLC. Um, DK Island is cool. Here’s my thing, right? For a $20 DLC. I wish DK Island had more to it. That’s probably my biggest thing here. I think the rogike mode is cool. Um, had fun with that. All right, Barrett’s here. So, I’m I’m about to end this in a second. But yeah, I wish DK Island for $20. I wish there was a lot more to it. You know, it was fun to explore just on the nostalgia side of it, but if you’re going to give me a $20 DLC, I want to have like I want DK Island to be jam-packed with bananas with golden bananas.
