How Should Mario Kart World Handle DLC?
I know I’ve been very negative on Mario Kart World in general, but that doesn’t mean that I want everything to be negative. And that’s where I wanted to talk about the potential of DLC. Now, I will say that if it’s 20 bucks, the game already being 80, that’s a scary thought, but let’s just ignore all of that and just have some fun and talk about potential DLC. Now, this isn’t stuff that I necessarily think that they will do, but I think this is a fun idea that if they did do it, it would be really cool. So, since Mario Kart World, part of my gripes are with the intermission tracks that they’re just kind of bland and they don’t have too much to them. I was thinking that they could stick with the world gimmick of this Mario Kart game. And what they could do is have different islands that you could go to to where there could be pipes towards the end of the map, or you could just go across the whole ocean if you wanted to. But they could have pipes that send you to different islands. And the way that they could do these islands, I think, could alleviate some of the negative things I have towards this game. that being intermission tracks and the free roam because both kind of feel bland to me but with these islands. So they could have one island that has original tracks, they could have another island that has retro tracks and then they could have another island that has crossover tracks. Now they could have as many islands as they want on these different track types. But I think the islands being designated to having one type of track could be really cool because if you have an island that’s just original tracks, then you get brand new original tracks. But I feel like it being DLC and them only focusing on eight tracks on that island. Or they could do four, but I’m thinking more eight. Well, actually, if there’s a bunch of other islands, maybe it is just four. So four or eight tracks. My thought process is that they could spend more time on the intermission part of those tracks so it feels like more. That way it doesn’t end up just being like a bland road you take to get to the track. And that would also make free roam more fun because you’d want to actually explore these different intermission tracks. And then same would go with the retro track island. But then where this gets really cool in my opinion is the crossover tracks. Let’s say they had an island that had Donkey Kong tracks and Kirby tracks. It would be really neat to be driving on a Donkey Kong track and the intermission is like this jungly type of area and it transitions into a Kirby type of track because that’s where they could also take more time into it and make it more unique. Because one of my criticisms of the game is that in my opinion, Sonic Crossworlds does the gimmick of the intermission track thing better than what Mario Kart World did. Because the crossworld portion of Sonic Crossworlds is basically an intermission track, but the lap feels like something. So, if they had a Donkey Kong area, let’s say there’s like vines you have to kind of cling on to and there’s a timing thing to it to where you can get boosts off of them. And then as it’s transitioning to the Kirby track, now you have to drive on stars and maybe some of the stars have different speeds or attributes as you’re going through. This would allow for a lot more nuance and more stuff to do on an intermission track. And not to mention, I mean, then you have the regular track, which it would just be super cool to have Donkey Kong tracks and Kirby tracks. But I do think the islands being segmented to certain track types, I think, is where this would work the best. So you have an original track island, a retro track island, and a crossover track island. That way the intermission tracks can be more suited towards whatever track it’s trying to be for. Because if they just had an island that had an original track, a retro track, and a crossover track, I don’t think it would flow as well. The concept of having an island of just crossover tracks where franchises would have intermission tracks that combine, I think would allow for a lot of variation. And you can really interchange any franchise you want. It could be Kirby, Donkey Kong, Zelda, Metroid. I think it would also be a really cool way to see franchises blend that may not normally. It was already cool enough to see Link join Mario Kart as it was. So to also have these franchises literally combining. So now they’re joining Mario Kart, but then they’re combining with the intermission track, I think would be super neat to see. And then of course with all of this, you could add more characters. And I think that’s where Free Roam could be more fun. I know that they’ve updated the game to where you can use a UFO to get characters easier, but it would be really fun to drive around the Donkey Kong area and you have to actually find the characters. I would have way more incentive to do that than driving around to get a new sticker. Even with Mario Party Jamberee, you had to take a picture of Pauline to get her in the game. It was kind of neat that you had to scope out and try to find where the characters were. So, with Mario Kart World, I mean, there’s really no reason they can’t do this. And it would be a lot of fun to be driving around a Donkey Kong area. I’m a big Donkey Kong fan, so I I’m kind of stuck on the Donkey Kong thing, but it’d be so much fun to drive around a Donkey Kong area and start finding the different Kongs and not knowing what Kongs are in the game. Like, you drive around, you find Lanky, you find Funky Kong, Tiny Kong, Dixie Kong, and then the amount of Easter eggs they could have. Oh my goodness, it’d be amazing. So, I think it could add a lot to Free Roam, as well as adding more nuance to intermission tracks and just adding more to the game in general. But I really do think that the overall concept of having different islands adds a lot of possibilities for Mario Kart World’s DLC. And I think it could make the world gimmick better because I don’t think it’s a horrible idea. I just feel like how it’s executed just didn’t really turn out how I was hoping. But I think DLC could help it. It wouldn’t help what we already have. But at least if I was doing a Donkey Kong track and I got an intermission track to go to a Kirby track, it’d be nice to know that there’d be more to do on that intermission track. Whereas right now when I get an intermission track, I’m already dreading it. And actually something else, too, because I had this idea for free roam in the past is if not only you could find characters, but what if you could find cart parts just laid out across the world. So you go to these islands and you start finding different Kirby cart parts or Donkey Kong cart parts, and then when you get enough of the cart parts, it builds an entire cart. I really do think they can redeem free roam. Now, do I think that they’re going to do any of the ideas I just said? Not really, but I think being able to find characters and cart parts within free roam would add a lot to it. Maybe not a lot, but it would make it more fun as you’re doing it. The reason why I say not a lot is because I mean there’s only so many characters and cart parts, but I would definitely want to find those. Like that would be something I would want to do regardless of how long it takes. I would actually want to do it. So even if it doesn’t take long, I think it’d be a lot of fun to search because you won’t know what’s in there. Like if I had no idea Lanky Kong was in the game and I found him and it was like you unlocked Lanky Kong, I would definitely be super hyped. Oh my gosh. And how did I forget? Imagine if you can drive off the island a little bit and K Rule’s ship is there and you can find K Rule and then what if the ship could become a track or maybe the ship is a part of an intermission track. See, this is where I feel like the possibilities are freaking endless when it comes to intermission tracks. And again, that’s where I think it’d make Free Roam a lot more fun. I remember driving around Peach’s Castle in Mario Kart 64. If I could drive around Kroll’s ship, that’d be freaking awesome. Initially, when thinking about DLC for Mario Kart World, I was thinking that intermission tracks could kind of ruin the potential of some of the DLC. But honestly, if they really just took their time and made the intermission tracks just have more to do in them, I don’t think all hope is lost. But will they do any of this? That’s up in the air. I do think this game is going to get DLC to some extent, but to what extent, I have no clue. I would just be shocked if one of their biggest titles doesn’t have DLC. The only thing that I thought of that could be a negative to all of this is that if all of the islands are segmented, then it could make it to where Grand Prix don’t have as much variation. So, I’m not opposed to it just being one big new island that has a bunch of tracks on it because maybe that would work better than having it all be separate. But the main takeaway is that what I would like to see is that they spend a lot of time making these areas feel special and connected because the intermissions being bland is really what my gripe is when it comes to Mario Kart World. I know some people don’t mind the intermission tracks, but for me, driving straight and just doing little turns, it’s just not really enough. And then when I go to explore in free roam, a lot of the areas feel bland and there just doesn’t feel like much to actually search for, or at least stuff that I even care to search for. And I feel like this stuff could be remedied by what I laid out with this DLC, regardless of if it’s segmented islands or just one big island. The main thing is cohesion and making these areas robust because people have said that free roam feels kind of like it was an afterthought and after playing it that’s the vibe that it gives off whether that’s what they did or not that’s kind of what it feels like. So if they spent a lot of time on a whole new island and made all of it feel connected and spend more time on each individual intermission track and the other stuff that I laid out about this DLC in general. I really do feel like it could alleviate the issues that I’ve had with this game. But now I lend the question off to you. What would you like to see for Mario Kart World DLC? Let me know in the comments down below. If you enjoyed this, feel free to leave a like, subscribe for future content, and until next time, I’ll see you all later.
Even though Mario Kart World costs $80 I don’t think that will stop it from having DLC. What kind of DLC could Mario Kart World have? What should Mario Kart World DLC be?
