Crimson Desert’s Open World Is at Least Twice as Big as Skyrim’s, and Larger Than the Red Dead Redemption 2 Map

    1. Is the size of an open world map a selling point for a game at this point? I see the title and I’m like okay.

    2. Clicked link, ads ads ads, no image of the map within 10s of loading. Fuck that shit

It could be 100 times as big, but if you don’t fill it with content it’s going to be worthless. Too many games have great content at A and B, but nothing in between.

Bigger does not mean better. If there’s giant areas with nothing meaningful to do it’s not going to hold my attention. They claim it’s packed with stuff… we shall see.

    5. I am very skeptical about this game. In general, when a game has the level of ambition this one has been showing, it tends to be average, at best, in everything.

    6. In the article, the developers reassured us that it won’t be just a big map of nothing. They said that it’ll have activities and distractions from the main quests to keep you occupied and realize that a big open world map is nothing without having things to do and see.

I just hope we get alot of secret areas to find. That what made Elden Ring so fun: you have this mission planned out in your head, then you go out into the world to complete that mission, all of a sudden you get distracted find a cave and now you’re in the underground of the map.

Hopefully we don’t get big spaces with a whole lot of nothing. Only game that made that appealing was Assassin’s Creed Origins with the huge desert. You’d be walking through it and have biblical visions, it was really neat.

    8. Honestly I’m getting pretty sick of the open world thing.  Especially since a lot of recent open world games have lame ass quests consisting of 1) go here 2) find x 3) go there 4) kill y 5) return here for lame reward.

    9. The time when map size mattered was around the time original Oblivion got released. Nowadays it’s limited to specific genres or game ideas, like Death Stranding 2 where big areas make the journey meaningful or Fallout 4 where the map is still too small due to the density of locations.

The maps are so big in current games devs struggle to think them out properly and fill with unique content. Instead we get 5 types of locations that are basically the same gameplay wise (Far Cry, Asassin’s Creed, Ghost of Yotei). I’d rather have F:New Vegas map, it was not that big, but every location was rewarding with unique experience.

    10. Larger doesn’t mean better. Hogwarts Legacy comes to mind. The map was Huge, but also empty and boring at the same time.

    11. This is the part where everyone in the thread starts copy pasting “wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle”. “Size doesn’t matter if there’s nothing to do”…….

The guy addressed that in the first like 8 sentences. They are stating it will be full of content. Whether or not it comes through we will see at release.

Man yall are so miserable lol. For a bunch of people that love games you sure seem unhappy talking about them.

    13. Can we like….see this world at some point? A demo? A video? Something that we can do in this world other than fly over it? That would help here.

I remember when I used to be hyped for this kind of info, but I’ve been burned enough now to know this just means vast empty world

Bigger doesn’t mean better, if the side quests and story don’t match the size then it becomes a complete waste

    16. I really liked the combat of Black desert online but practically everything else in it turned me off. Overly complicated trade and caravan mechanics, grindy and p2w aspects etc.

If crimson desert can put that combat in a competent single player game without some of that baggage it sounds fun. Doesn’t even have to be great, just a mid game with good combat would be enough for me.

I’m not preordering though. We will see in march

I want this to be a great game. But I’ve read about the control setup. Apparently there’s dozens of combo button presses for every kind of oddball and stylish melee attack and defense move.

I guess that can be cool for some people, but it seems more like a Devil May Cry standard versus an RPG. Perhaps that’s what they are going for? Many people enjoy that, but I do not.

Of course, we won’t know until the game is released. I am definitely waiting on reviews before buying this.

    18. I don’t care how big it is I care if it’s good. Ac Valhalla was absolutely massive and boring as all hell.

    19. I mean I would hope so, 1 game is like 15 years old, the other is from last gen. Useless article.

    20. Any woman will tell you that size isn’t too relevant to the conversation. If you don’t do anything with it then it’s a waste..

Just don’t take a page out of Ubisofts or Nintendo’s open world playbook and fill it with so much dumb bullshit that you’re tripping over collectables and shit.

    21. There’s a difference between a large map, and a filled map. Make it as big as ya want, but please fill it with lots to do (and not copy-paste towers/outposts)

When games start boasting about their map size I get a bit weary. Still have high hopes for this one.

    23. I wish more open world games had the mindset of Yakuza. Make a relatively small area, and pack it to the absolute brim with stuff to do.

    24. Haven’t we moved beyond “biggest open world = best”? When I hear this kinda shit during the pre launch hype, I lose a lot of confidence in the game.

    25. TwoWheelsOneButt on

I wonder when developers/publishers will realize this isn’t the pull they think it is.

Starfield had the same announcement right before launch. And it was filled with a million variations of six encounters with the most mind numbing walking between each POI.

      I don’t want large. I want hand-built and interesting.

    26. Tired of reddit automatically branding a big map as “bad”. Big maps are cool. They add immersion. They can awe. Open world games should strive for big maps.

    27. Besides a few boss fights and engine tech, they havent showed us anything lol. I feel like this game is gonna be a everything and nothing at the same time
