Honestly haven't noticed my PS5 getting hot, but also haven't been paying too much attention. Just noticed these black spots that are seemingly in line with the air vents on the back and front. They don't come off with a wipe like dust would. Is it burning? Thought?

It’s dust that’s been vapored into the plastic by the heat. Take out the plates and clean them with water, maybe add some soap as well.

    2. It’s not ash, cause if it was burning, the console would show other symptoms. It looks like the air in the room isn’t very clean. Maybe cigarettes? Candles? Something is making the air funky and since the console use air to cool itself, the particles can deposit there along the ridge. I’ve seen this in homes where people were smoking, mostly. It can also be a sign that the console is old cause some gunk and particle can accumulate over the years anyway, especially if the console is from launch. If it doesn’t clean easily it might be some gunk that needs a stronger product to come off, but be careful or the plastic can be damaged as well.

Not an expert but I hope it helps! 🙂

Edit: it looks similar to a deposit I’ve seen on white plastic surface before, like a white laptop or even a Wii back in the days. One of the cons of having something in white, it needs more cleaning and more care.

It’s dust. It cakes on the white plates after a while, but it’ll wipe off with a damp cloth or paper towel. I’m guessing you haven’t removed your plates and dusted your machine– you’ll find more dust that looks like discoloration inside the plates when you do.

You also asked for advice on preventing dust buildup. General advice:

      – Obviously, dust regularly around your unit. Once a week should do.

      – Never store on or near the floor. More dust builds up there, and your PS5 is like a low-powered vacuum. It will suck in all the dust you kick up while walking and all the dust falling around it.

      – Do not store in confined spaces where dust has an easier time collecting. 4 inches of clearance on all sides, *bare minimum*

      – Every six-to-eight months or so, remove your plates, wipe them down. You’ll also want to do some minimal internal dusting: remove your fan and clean the blades, and vacuum inside the fan bay and along the vents to remove internal dust. This isn’t too intensive, takes about 10 minutes, not doing a full disassembly. Inside the fan bay, you’ll be able to see the heatsinks. You can use an antistatic dusting brush to remove surface-level dust.
