Well Sonic is the “fastest thing alive” that must mean Mario is undead. It’s canon now.

Its good to know that canonically, Sonic’s exact speed is somehwere between the speed of sound and the speed of Super Mario

I think having Sonic in the front could also send the message to kids that Sonic is the best & fastest character in the game, which is not necessarily the case (idk because I never played it).

I don’t think I ever looked at the promotional material long enough to notice something like that
This feels like one of those “this is a fun bit of trivia” stories that some haters will twist into “Nintendo is the evilest company”

But Sonic had already lapped Mario, so while it looked good in a still image, it didn’t tell the whole story.

Well yeah. Reasons why should be obvious to anyone with a brain.

> Hasegawa stated that, regardless of how things played out in gameplay, “in the video, Mario always needs to win.” Even though Sonic is canonically much faster, and often portrayed as more powerful in other crossover titles like Super Smash Bros, Nintendo required that marketing materials never show Mario losing to Sonic. This wasn’t framed as a gameplay balance issue, but rather a branding mandate based on what he described as the “political issues”.
As much as Mario is the strongest brand by a lot compared to Sonic. Taking it this far is a little too much.
It reminds me of the marketing mandates Marvel forced Capcom to follow during MvC3’s marketing. Marvel characters were already depicted winning no matter what.

Well, yeah, if the games were releasing for a SEGA console I could see them asking the same thing

Sonic has to let that plumber feel like he has a chance, or it’s no fun for anyone!

I wonder which mushroom Mario was on when that picture was taken.

If their wording was something like “Can you make it so Sonic struggles to keep up with Mario” then that’s different and sounds a bit more realistic if they were trying to show a fair race.
