For those that don’t know, this is a Shinto shrine that commemorates the people who fought for and died for Japan throughout its history.
Then in the 1970s (?) the kami (spirits) of class A war criminals (Tojo Hideki, Matsui Iwane, Doihara Kenji, etc) were interred there by a Shinto priest.
Ever since, any ministerial visits has met with backlash from China and South Korea because they feel that they’re paying tribute to a regime that had committed various atrocities throughout their countries. Nanjing. Comfort Women. Unit 731. The list goes on.
Moreover, there is a museum related to it called Yushukan that gives a revisionist take on Japan’s war. They expound on how Japan was fighting a righteous war to drive the European powers out of Asia, and how Pearl Harbor was justified because the US was preventing Japan for conducting its righteous crusade in China by refusing to sell Japan oil.
That said, good move on the behalf of the Pokemon Company. I can still buy pokemon cards. Yay!
