When I saw this (now old) meme, I initially laughed at the stupidly low amount… then I realized I'm probably the one who's out of line and hangs out with people who are comfortable dropping $400-$500 a month on video games, thus always making me feel like a "low spender."

So, I'm curious to know how much you spend on average per year on your gaming hobby.

I dont buy games, prefer to rent them. I spend about £300 a year renting all the big titles. In some rare instances I will buy a game.

    2. What kind of hobbies are these supposed to be?
Almost nothing is that cheap, except maybe just running around in parks and stuff – but i wouldn’t call that a hobby.

I guess i drop on average about 60 to $100 per month.
+ Semi-Fix payments like PS Plus which is about $100 for me

    3. Question is, because they don’t want or need or because they can’t afford more?

Anyhow, apart from initial investment like console, TV and controllers, I don’t spend that much.

300€ a year on games sounds about right. Helps that I am just getting back into the hobby, so lots of titles on my backlog are available for around 10€.

I’ve spent roughly 8k over the last 2 years on my gaming/sim racing hobby, Ive got a few hobbies, cycling, a bike, running but gaming is my main one.

Everyone’s income is obviously completely different and everyone has different commitments, family etc but im single AF so my disposable income after my bills are paid is all spent on myself 😂

Probably around $500 if I had to guess. It’s slowly getting lower and lower over time.

Guitar on the other hand… is kind of ridiculous. Easily $1000 per year, at least. Pedals and amps are expensive when you buy new ones all the time.

    6. I buy stuff on sale sometimes years after its release, probably $100-$150 . When GTA drops though day 1

Older gamer here. Find less time for gaming now. Ps plus premium (discounted) does me just fine. Once in a while I might get a game I really can’t wait for. Gta6 maybe the next one. Last one was cyberpunk on sale.

How do I spend more on laundry detergent or toilet paper or peanut butter than the average person spends on their hobbies? That can’t be right.

These people need some fucking new hobbies.

    9. no where near that much. brand new games haven’t been worth my money. only buy older games on deep discount.

    10. On video games alone? I probably spent over $2K last year, more like $3K if you include buying a Switch 2 and games.

    11. According to my banking app, I spent £2780 on gaming in 2025. Note that includes hardware too, and I did get a Steam Deck, Switch 2 and OLED monitor lol. The previous year was just £440

Not much, most of the games I play are on PlayStation Premium. I don’t buy games on launch date anymore I always wait for a sale even if it means waiting for a game a few years after launch.

    13. Are they considering beer/alcohol and parties on those “hobbies”?

Cause a lot of adults dont have traditional hobbies because they get most of their free time getting drunk

    14. You’re both wrong, your friends spending 400-500 monthly is ridiculous, and 255 per year is also kinda ridiculous and probably doesnt include car hobbyists who alone would make it well into the thousands if we talk “average person”

    15. Ps+ extra on -25% black friday offer yearly. Maybe one game a year on top of that.

Few hundreds monthly goes to savings account.
