Right now, I have a new 3ds xl, but it’s pretty old and not In The best condition, so I plan on buying a new console. I’m thinking about getting a ds for playing ds games, since it might look better on it, and have a smaller form factor, as the new 3ds xl is pretty huge. Is this a good idea, or should I just get a new 3ds xl. If it is, which version of the ds should I get. I’m planning on modding it, and I’d prefer it to not be too big

The dsi xl is perfect for what you are looking for. Dsi is great too.
Get a DSi XL. They play in the best quality, have the biggest screens without stretching out the pixels and all models come with dual IPS screens. Plus when modded you can play GBA games too.
Might be cheaper or around the same price to fix your 3ds then you can play on that and play 3ds games
