Jason Schreier and John Linneman both speculated in their podcasts this week that Sony could be pulling away from PC ports for their singleplayer games, with Schreier even suggesting that Wolverine would never release on the platform

    1. Their pc sales have been kinda disappointing recently. When you add the psn requirement and piracy issues, it adds up. Live service games will stay on pc of course. (although I do wonder about pc gran turismo future, since 7 was never ported).

    2. Interesting since they’re releasing Death Stranding 2 on PC next month and the Kena sequel later this year as well.

    3. Between this and the news that the new Xbox CEO wants to bring back the old style of Xbox, it feels like we’re heading back towards console exclusives.

    4. Have the PC sales been truly that great?

We may be seeing a return to “Console Exclusive” in general, not just for Playstation.

    5. A hybrid approach makes sense. Titles that go to PC will make more money directly, but having a few key exclusives can help push the hardware. At least be ambiguous about it, if people think that a PC port is promised and will happen quickly then they are pretty unlikely to buy in to the hardware ecosystem.

This would be the correct choice. Nintendo is doing perfectly fine without pc and once sony controls their dev budgets, they will too. The pc sales havent been impressive at all

I haven’t sold my PS5 specifically because of Saros and Wolverine. I love using it but I love tweaking settings on my gaming PC better and also not having to pay monthly to play multi-player.

This would be disappointing, but likely not surprising. Their PC versions sell *okay* depending on the game, with Helldivers being a notable exception, but the margins for creating them might not ultimately be worth it compared to the PlayStation versions. Especially if studio resources are tied up when they need them on other projects.

Contrary to popular belief, making a good PC port isn’t a simple or cheap process just because the game already exists on another platform.

    9. I said this and got absolutely battered in comments.

I said that they already appear to be pulling back from PC sometimes. Astro Bot is never coming to PC, for example.

Some of the sales figures for the PC games do not appear to have been worth the effort.

It makes sense. If they want more money out of me, they have to give me more reasons to spend it on PlayStation. Exclusive titles will make it so that I don’t want to move over to PC or the next Xbox (if that happens).

You could look at the different outcomes of Xbox and Nintendo and reasonably conclude that quality exclusives can make or break hardware sales, assuming the console has solid third party support. While maybe it isn’t best for the consumer, I would totally get it if Sony pulled their IPs back into console exclusivity.

    12. No surprise really, didn’t Sony said not too long ago that ports didn’t make sense financially.

Good neither Xbox or Sony shouldve ever abandoned exclusives. Exclusives sell consoles and give people a reason to be in your ecosystem its that simple. Seems only nintendo understands that nowadays. Live service games can be multiplatform that makes sense. But Sony should really gatekeep what they do with their single player cinematic experiences

    14. Makes sense even if they had decent pc sales for some games, they only care about getting ppl into consoles, and pc gamers would rather wait for years for the next port instead of buying a console, ppl who are actually interested probably already got one.

    15. On one hand, I hate the idea of exclusives and think all games should be available on every platform – purely from a moral standpoint.

On the other hand, my PS5 has not been touched since AstroBot three years ago. I moved in October of last year and haven’t even plugged it in. So I would appreciate a reason to use this expensive machine.

    16. To be totally honest, my PS5 has been collecting dust since I’d been able to play everything on PC instead.

I don’t like it, but I get why they’d do it (assuming that selling PlayStation *hardware* is important to them).

      The cycle continues.

      We’re leaving Steam!
      Ah fuck, we’re broke.
      We’re coming back to Steam!

    18. I think Jason Schreier’s analysis on PlayStation pulling away from porting games to PC and saying Wolverine won’t get a port is wrong.

The reason their output has slowed is because if you look at it, what games have not been ported other than GT7 and Yotei?

Sony has already said that they are not going to go back and retroactively port old titles such as the Nathan Drake collection and that their focus is on their current portfolio.

Yotei will probably get a release on PC next year and Wolverine will probably get one in early 2028.

Meanwhile Square-Enix saying that they are going to go even harder after the PC market. All in all I think this is pre-emptive as they know PC gaming while already expensive is going to skyrocket pricing wise over the next couple of years. I think they are planning on a lot more people moving back to console because PC gaming is going to be so expensive you’ll basically have to finance a PC like you would a car.

    20. Good. I do expect Wolverine to go to PC someday only because it’s a Marvel IP and there’s probably something in the contract that let’s PS have a period of exclusivity due to obviously being the ones making the game. Other partnership games like Death Stranding, Stellar Blade, Kena etc’.. those could either be exclusive for a period of time or PS5(console exclusive)/PC at launch.

For true 1st party, that means studios under PS, those should remain exclusive to the console, after all that’s the strength of a gaming console.

    21. Icy_Topic_4844 on

They aren’t the financial homeruns they expected and honestly as many of us have said in the past, you need exclusives to give your console identity and/or give ppl a reason to choose your console over other consoles/pc. I cant count how many times I’ve heard people say “well ill wait for it to come to PC”. Wolverine will be a system seller and is that type of game.

    22. Not surprising. Xbox is dead and Sony has opportunity to make PlayStation the ultimate gaming platform ever. Why give people reasons to go with PC instead of PS with ports?

    23. Makes sense if they are finding their biggest ips aren’t selling (spiderman being the exception).

We had it leaked a month ago they are worried it’s effecting the brand. Well i disagree, I have definitely been my console less because games are on pc.

    24. It’s an unpopular opinion with how many PC gamers are out there now but it’s just objective fact that when you port your games to other platforms all you do is give people another excuse to play on there instead of your platform. All those people going around saying “ps5 has no games” is because of this, because they act like games on everything don’t count for the ps5.

I can’t remember where I saw this but earlier this gen I saw that around a third of PC gamers in the US had a ps4 last gen and that’s because you knew all those big games weren’t coming to PC. Same reason why so many people buy switches.

    25. Honestly that will just keep me from experiencing the ps6 generation entirely if that’s the case, I’m not planning on buying a ps6 and if the games are exclusive I’ll just miss them 🤷

    26. An person on Reset Era said this is specifically for single-player games from Sony’s own studios, and it will take a while for it “to be felt” in reality (maybe they have some ports already in production).

But it seems to be something that has been circulation behind the scenes for some time now.

    27. At least they don’t seem to care about the PS4 emulator and are letting us play Bloodborne in peace. Thanks, Sony.

    28. We-are-all-dead-90 on

Good. We need more console exclusives. Thats how you end up with competition between companies resulting in all-time great games.

    29. well done xbox for completely shitting the bed so sony doesn’t have to be competitive anymore.

    30. I feel like they’re temporary stopping the ports to make the PS6 and handheld look better, cause Wolverine/any PS5 exclusive with even higher settings than the PS5Pro on PS6 would be more exciting without a PC port than with,. (Even though a equivalent PC would probably cost at least double)
