soo i've had my 3ds since 2012 and haven't used it pretty much at all since 2021 since i got my switch (id usually just turn it on a few times for the year to make sure its working etc but I would really play for an hour+ tbh)
the right hinge broke back in 2022 so i haven't used it much since then
it worked fine until late last year, but would shut down after every 10 mins + opening the camera kept causing it to crash and well now the top screen is black
im assuming its because the ribbon looks ripped? can i fix this at home using one of the replacement kits? and would it make sense to fix it if the hinge is still cracked (i think i threw the piece away)

It probably isnt ripped. Sounds to me like the ribbon cable is pulled too tighly and is being pulled out in certain positions. First time I tried to replace a top screen I fed the cables back thru wrong and had the exact same issue.
Look up the step by step guide on ifixit.com and follow that. Should be able to get a top screen for around 10$
