I love the steam deck and decided to take it with me on my recent trip to China, but knew I was either going to pick up a 3DS or an Ayn Thor while I was there. Me and my partner ended up buying a NN3DSLL each and couldn’t be happier.

After getting rid of my old 3DS last year due to some issues it had, I’ve been desperate for a replacement. But with the prices going crazy in the UK I was considering just picking up an Ayn Thor instead. While in China I managed to snag this black LL for around £120 and my girlfriend got her white IPS LL for around £150.

After picking it up, I didn’t touch the steam deck for the rest of the trip. The steam deck has a much larger power draw and the battery drains much faster when compared to the 3DS which means unless you have access to a power outlet to plug the official charger into, or a good enough portable charger, you’re going to struggle to keep it switched on while travelling. The 3DS is so convenient. I could charge it from the USB A outlet on the planes and trains as well as from a small portable charger. It also felt a lot more convenient to carry around as I could just flip the screen down and put it away when moving around instead of having to pack the steam deck away into its case. I know this is all common sense stuff, but after spending time with modern handheld devices, I’d forgotten how convenient this thing was.

Overall couldn’t be happier with this thing. Going back to my favourite 3DS JRPGS, and having the convenient form factor of a traditional handheld device has been so nice. This will be my go to when travelling from now on, as much as I do love the steam deck.
