Since it still loads mods even when unchecked and from my experiences, it doesn't really affect loadorder. So what's the point?
Would be great if it temporarily removed the mod as if it was actually unsubscribed to, would make switching between collections so smooth.
Have you guys found any use with it?

Assuming doing what I think it does, this likely depends on the game if they made integration to using new mod loader.
So chances are, it telling game hey user deactivated mod, game doesn’t care as long it see files in said location it going use it no matter what.
Take L4D2 example you can install many mods, but it will tell you if any mod overlaps because of the tag system, and to fix it you just uncheck the boxes, without deleting the mod, this tell game not use said mod.
