After years of looking, I found an old 3ds in good condition for a reasonable price, as you can see there's an imprint of the lower screen on the top lens, caused by the upper screen legs.

These smudges do not go away, I have tried a microfiber wipe and it did nothing. Using alcohol is not an option.

I read online that the only way of getting rid of the smudges is replacing the lens, but I'm scared of breaking something.

Is there a way to properly clean it? And if there isn't, how easy or hard is it to replace the top lens?

They’re not smudges, they’re scratches created by the bottom and top screen touching each other when the shell is closed. You may be able to use some Polywatch Polish to lessen the visibility of them, it’s a common trick to remove scratches on the plastic lens in the Oculus Quest community, but they won’t go away without a replacement. Find some replacement rubber spacers to prevent the issue from getting worse.
