Ghost of Yotei dev says cutting features from games is “really important,” so Sucker Punch had weekly meetings where “people would clap” every time something got deleted

Horizon is a great example of why this is needed. The core hunting gameplay is great, then it is bogged down with endless fetch quests and dialogue that adds nothing to the experience. It would be a better game with 25% less filler content.

I mean he isn’t really wrong imo. There is a fine line between a feature and boring bloat.

    3. So they literally cut everything new cause the game is identical to Tsushima with a worst story

    4. When you throw away time and resources chasing things that don’t make your game better you get games like Suicide Squad, and not Ghost of Yotei.

Fuck. I will always be absolutely furious that the Rocksteady founders were so butthurt people disliked the Batmobile, they developed a fetish for useless cars in games and pushed way too hard to get them in Suicide Squad. Everyone was supposed to have a personalized car and they wasted at least 6 months on that shit.

    5. And yet they still included the ridiculous campfire mini game. It was cool the first time but I’m not surprised they give you an option to skip it.

    6. I’m actually surprised devs are still cutting things considering how long and bloated most modern games are and then their sequels are even longer but don’t usually introduce anything that new or different which is why so many people have burned out on sequels this gen.

Back in the day when games were shorter (sub 20 hours outside of RPGs) you had more room to introduce meaningful changes in sequels because a lot of ideas were left on the cutting room floor due to less time.

    7. Exactly. Having a streamlined design throughline without adding stuff just to add it is a very fine line.

It’s always the idea of, “If you removed a mechanic, would anything change.”

The only feature I miss was the music activating certain weather. Every time I play Yotei its cloudy/rainy with no way to change it, which is a shame because the scripted moments with clear skies look INSANELY gorgeous.

Still had way too many gadgets/tools though! I loved it but man it was pretty bloated on some regards

    10. I wonder how much clapping happened when they decided to cut having a good story.
