I believe that was a prototype model that was before the ps3 was released? Controller was redesigned before release. I could be wrong but that’s how I remember it.

Yeah, the story is that it came after PS1 and PS2, but before PS4 and PS5.

That was the first reveal of the look of the PS3, on May 16 2005, at E3. The controller was just a prototype and got a LOT of people talking about how terrible it looked. It’s unsure whether this was just some mock-up and Sony already knew they would just iterate on the DualShock 2 to make the Sixaxis and the wireless DualShock 3, or if somebody ACTUALLY thought this was a viable controller. Besides that, the PS3 itself is just the fat/launch PS3, but in shiny silver/grey. It would be made black for release.
It also had WAAAAAY too many ports, like TWO HDMI ports for some reason, and SIX USB ports in total.

Bold move asking on a day like today.

They presented this at E3 if I am not mistaken. There was a HUGE outcry after the event about the design. So this was the first and last time that the world saw that controller. Not sure what Sony was thinking. Maybe it was intentional to shock and get the extra attention and that they internally knew they would ship with a more conventional controller that we eventually got.

Controller for scale.

When I was like 19 this was the first version of the PS3 I saw. Looking back the system itself was sleek and the backwards compatibility was actually awesome but the two things people hated was the spiderman font and this controller. Glad that they made the controller kind of a remake of the dual shock 2.
