It’s painful to use the non XL 3ds if you have adult hands, and the price tag on these games is typically absurd if you want the DS line of games. The 3DS are more affordable but still quite expensive.

Where are you from? If you’re in europe and you buy from vinted, then this is a really bad price. You can find Old 3ds non XL for as low as 70€ on vinted. They go around 90/100€ in most cases.
About the “worth it” question, the 3ds if modded can play many pokemon games, some of them are only enjoyable on a 3ds (bc it has 2 screens, emulation with 1 screen is not the same) and you can play virtual consoles/retro compatibility with DS pokemon games.

From my knowledge mh edition was only released in japan, this means its region locked if unmodded or simply reshelled, especially with this bottom screen frame, thats not original. Other than that you should find some og 3ds for around 100/120€
