I feel like unless it's a super tiny fish I have absolutely no chance of catching it. The timer is just too fast. What am I doing wrong and how can I improve?

You have to do clydes little side thing and buy the fish guides he sells. Theres also apparently something in the setting to make the holding R2 part easier. I never used it but i saw someone else say it
There’s accessibility settings to make it so you only have to hold square and tap right trigger, makes it way more manageable.
Plus there are items you can buy or find to make fishing easier. First one you can buy, the other two are quest items I believe. So check the quest board in Xion.
Turn on the simplified fishing controls in accessibility. Makes it so you only have to hold square instead of mash, and any level of pressure on R2 will work.
Also, while fishing at least, I prefer to turn off adaptive triggers, the effect while you’re reeling on is cool at first but gets old pretty quick.
Turn on the Accessibility options, but you’ll still need to spam square really fast.
what you’re missing is that if you make a wrong input, it takes time off your timer. You actually have plenty of time and can mash square pretty slowly, but if the fish turns around and your line is no longer opposing it, and you continue to mash square, it absolutely melts your remaining time. So the key is to actually go slower when the fish is about to change direction. Once I realised this I never failed a catch again.
Stay by Clyde and just get small fish until you have enough points for the skill upgrades. It gets super easy.
