I bought this console a number of years ago. Intending one day to hook it up and play things like the HD version of Windwaker and other things as one would.
With the recent closure of the store that got me thinking, if I open this up now hook it up to my TV can I even update it normally or do I have to go through "unsupported" ways of doing that?
Do I even have to worry about that? Will even the last game to come out on the system work on the system if the system is 1.0?
This is a refurbished system direct from Nintendo that you could buy from Nintendo on their website and I've never opened it it's still sealed. (Why Nintendo seals their refurbished consoles but not the new ones still perplexes me to this day.) So to be honest I don't know what version of the software it has on it at this point. And to be perfectly honest I'm not even sure I should open it at this point and just wait for those games to come to a switch or switch2 console.
Any thoughts guys?

You can update it with no issues. eShop servers and update servers are separate things
Going this long unused, there is a possible chance the internal memory has failed. And the system won’t even boot.
Why not just hook it up and see?
they DID not shut down the eShop service. they only made it so you can’t buy new games and stuff. the download servers are still on so you can update your console and if you bought something before you can still redownload it.
It updates. Actually I dont think they shut down those.
How do you even manage to buy a console and not open the box for years
Personally I wouldn’t open it. I’d add it to my collection and just buy another Wii U at this point. Especially if it was sealed by Nintendo
