Classic Kurt Article: Opinion, Animal Crossing New Horizons isn’t THAT Amazing

After playing 4 games in the series, I think I've gotten tired of paying off my house again. I do like the collecting aspect a lot though, read the rest of my thoughts in the blog post below.

I've written various articles on different blog creator sites, but now that I have my own website I decided to reload all of them on my website's blog. Have a read from this blast from the past.

P.S. I'm available to hire as a videogame journalist if you're interested.

    1. Nh is great for how much they added with the crafting mechanics. I think the main issue is the lack of dialog, they should have gone full on with it in modern age. It should have been difficult to get repeat dialog, yet it felt like it had less than the GameCube versions

Standard “It’s score objectively isn’t justified because I didn’t like it that much” videogame journalist take. You would probably give minecraft a 7/10 too.

    3. It’s good, but its definitely not the best Animal Crossing. I think they leaned too heavily into the design aspect rather than the life sim aspect.

      I’d rank it….

      1. New Leaf
      2. Wild World
      3. Population Growing
      4. New Horizons
      5. City Folk

Yeah I got tired of the series since playing the original. It’s too samey. I can imagine those new to the series having a blast.

    6. It’s timing was impeccable, coming out just before the COVID lockdowns started in many places. It allowed people to connect over something while many were isolated and without a lot of work to do.

I’m a casual player. But every recent Animal Crossing game I’ve played felt equally underwhelming compared to its growing hype. I really enjoy the features but a lot of stuff feels like they’re lacking depth. Crafting in New Horizons was amazing but the dialogues? Painfully repetitive.

I feel other life sim equivalents such as Stardew Valley and My Time At Sandrock are offering much more finished and an all rounder experience.

For all its faults, NH’s crafting and full control of your island gave a much needed shakeup to a series that was frankly becoming pretty stagnant. Having played since Gamecube, to me Wild World felt like a strong advancement but City Folk and New Leaf mostly felt like “more stuff” after that. Hopefully in the next one they can fill back in some of NH’s weak points and have the best of both worlds.

I enjoyed it enough, but all of the entries pale in comparison to the original in Gamecube for one simple reason: characters dialogue. The sass, the endearing banter, the odd reactions… it was fun to interact with the villagers. Despite all the improvements in gameplay, all villagers now are pushover planks that seek to please you every second, not to mention how repetitive every behavior is. Time will tell if we ever get some of the sass back

    10. been a lifelong animal crossing player but tbh new horizons hit at just the right moment in my life. My son had just been born and with the covid lockdown in place i had plenty of time off work. I got my wife who never touched a game in her life into it and we would spend out days in lockdown planting trees, fishing, and just enjoying the soundtrack to new horizons. Overall just a perfect time for the game to release. Really hoping the switch 2 releases with a new animal crossing game

I think we can all agree on not using DS limitations for the next game, right?

    12. I don’t get it personally, but my wife and daughters have each put 42 hojillion hours into this game. A rare ray of sunshine for them during COVID.
