Time for some surgery on this tired controller that happens to not even be 1-year-old. Not only does the left stick have a very, very disruptive and intermittent drift, but the down d-pad button works about 50% of the time.
I am expecting to remove the left stick off of the circuit board, realize that there's in fact nothing I can do to it to fix the problem, order a new left joystick replacement, somehow screw up the board trying to install the new one, and then proceed to buy a new controller in the end anyways. Problem solved!

Good luck with the tinkering though, I took my two DS controllers to a shop to get fixed. They had stick drift together in the same week or so.
