Ranking Every Transformers DLC
Downloadable content or DLC is now synonymous with the modern gaming landscape. Seems like every single AAA developer has post-launch DLC. Doom: The Dark Ages, before it even came out, you could pre-order the DLC. games like Call of Duty with season passes, adding brand new zombie maps and multiplayer maps, stuff like Destiny, adding brand new raids, dungeons, purchasing expansions like Crow’s End, House of Wolves, The Taken King, and Rise of Iron kept the game alive. A game that probably would have only lasted a few months, lasted a few years, and is still being played today, especially its sequel, Destiny 2. DLC can keep an old game fresh and Transformers is no exception to that. Today I want to look at the history of DLC in Transformers games. Starting with the original. Back in 2007, Michael Ba’s first Transformers movie came out and it was a hit. People couldn’t get enough of it. It was cool to like Transformers again. But with something that mainstream, it’s going to come in with a lot of tie-in merchandise such as comic books, toy aisles, video games, and that’s what we’re going to be taking a look at today. Transformers the game came out on just about every single console and handheld you can think of at the time. The Xbox 360, the PS2, the Wii, and the Nintendo DS. Transformers Autobots and Transformers Decepticons version. If you were lucky enough to have the patience to, unlike me as a kid, you could log on to the Nintendo Wi-Fi network, compete in challenges and community events, as well as play PvP against your friends in All Spark Wars with a bunch of different game modes. But you could also unlock two characters. The first being exclusive to the Decepticons version, a G1 Starscream repaint. And he looks very derpy. Yeah, I can’t get over this either. I think this is the one instance where the Autobots version is actually better than the Decepticons version because the Decepticons version has objectively a better story, has better written characters and dialogue. It has, in my opinion, better open worlds. However, in the Autobots version, you could unlock the only jet in that version of the game, which was Skydive. Skydive had a original model. It was cool. Like I was jealous when I found out what the Autobots got versus the Decepticons. Skydive, at least design-wise, really fits in with the movies and is one of my favorite Bayers designs despite coming from a DS game. Unfortunately, you are unable to get these characters now because Nintendo, when they moved over to the 3DS and Wii U, shut down the original Nintendo Wi-Fi network and replaced it with their own Nintendo network. Although if you mod the game or you use Action Replay to cheat them back in, you can still unlock and play as these characters. $700 million later and Revenge of the Fallen was green lit after the smash hit of Michael Bay’s first movie on Xbox 360. for Revenge of the Fallen. The game came out along with post-launch DLC in the form of a character and map pack. 11 new characters including G1 Optimus Prime, G1 Megatron, G1 Starscream, characters like Soundwave, who appeared in the movie, Jetfire, Sideswipe, a G1 recolor of Ratchet, and so many others. And they’d be battling it out on three new multiplayer maps. The G1 skins were repurposed from a now cancelled Transformers video game under the same studio that were forced to go work in the Call of Duty mines after this game came out, which is a real shame because I would have loved to see this more grounded, realistic take on G1 going to plants like Junkon in Quintessa. Actually played a dev build of this on stream, which I’ll link in the description down below. It was very fun exploring all of the levels and playing as these characters that were locked to the Xbox 360 that I never got to play as. Transformers War for Cybertron came out in 2010 and is my favorite video game of all time to this day. And what made it even better is while waiting for the beloved sequel Fall of Cybertron to come out, Highmoon bestowed upon us with not one but two DLC packs. These DLC packs included not just multiplayer maps, but escalation maps where you could fight off hordes of enemies and go through the waves in a Call of Duty zombiesesque mode, as well as unlocking for multiplayer and escalation. 11 new playable characters that you could customize in multiplayer. Jazz, Zeta Prime, Shockwave, who you could get early if you pre-ordered the game at EB Games if you lived here in Canada, or GameStop in America, Demolisher, Dead End, Scattershot, and so many others. This was such a great time to be a Transformers fan. But as much as I love War Cybertron, the DLC and hype season for Fall of Cybertron was even greater. Fall of Cybertron’s DLC season was handled a little bit differently from War for Cybertron. Instead of adding brand new multiplayer and escalation maps, they instead decided to make character packs, adding characters in their parts to multiplayer so you can make your own custom character using them. First one, the Dinobot Destruction Pack. And obviously, this included the Dinobots. It included characters like Ultra Magnus, Zeta Prime, Neil Jack, and so many others. And I begged my dad to buy this pack for me on Xbox 360 because I wanted to play as Grimlock so bad. And eventually, after enough begging, he bought it for me. And I was so happy. Now I can’t stand seeing Grimlock in multiplayer because usually it’s just some competitive nerd who’s tryharding on a game that came out in 2012, by the way, 13 years ago. It’s just some sweaty clan kid. Despite the fact this game isn’t competitive at all, has one of the most broken metas in any video game and never even had a ranked mode, some people still to this day, even on fan servers, take this game a little bit too seriously and just kind of suck the fun out of it for everybody else. Sorry, I’ve just wanted to call them out on that for a while. But next up, we got the massive fury pack, which included characters like G1 Optimus Prime, Hound, and Blastoff, but as well the Insecticons. The main theme of these DLCs was Dinobots versus Insecticons. And once again, you can use all of these parts in order to make your own custom characters. Or you could be boring and just play as an already existing character. I don’t know why you would do that. But that’s not all. All of Cybertron also had campaign DLC. If you pre-order the game, you could get stuff like G2 Bruticus, which unfortunately did not change the color palette of any of the Combaticons. But in during the Bruticus missions, you could have G2 colors. But last but not least, you could get G1 Optimus Prime as a playable character in campaign along with Shockwave’s prototype weapon from the campaign that he never got to use, the Slingshot, and a G1 inspired Megatron pistol, which even makes the classic G1 sound effects. While I would have appreciated some brand new maps, especially after playing this game for 13 years, all the DLC in this game was really good. As much as I wish I could omit this, I legally have to talk about Rise of the Duke Spook in order to fit the video quota because it had DLC, it wasn’t very good. So, Duke Spook kind of went a little bit too crazy with the DLC. So, there were individual character packs, but as well just combo packs like you could get the glass gas, you could get throwback pistol, you could get the seekers like Thundercracker and Skywarp, lock down and stinger. There’s just basically a lot of reused assets and DLCs from previous ones where they just thought, “Oh, instead of making anything new other than the Beavers characters, what if we just recycle characters that were free in other games?” Yeah, cool. Well, that was Duke Spook. Uh hopefully my lawyers are satisfied with that. Also, because I’ll never get the chance to talk about it again on this channel. Look how absolutely vile and disgusting Bayers Optimus is in Rise of the Duke’s food. Oh my god, he looks so ugly. I know. I don’t like night mode Optimus that much, right? But there’s just something about this game’s version of him that’s just uncanny. He is the most putrid looking for us now. Okay, I think I lost him. Transformers Devastation came out in 2015, right at the end of Activision and Hasbro’s licensing agreement at the beginning of 2007. Activision was able to make and publish Transformers games. But in 2015, the license was coming to an end. So, Activision did what Activision always does, tries to milk every single last dollar out of a franchise before retiring it. This happened with Spider-Man. This happened with Tony Hawk. And this happened with Transformers. Despite that, Transformers Devastation is actually really good game. It’s just really short and could use a little bit more content. Luckily, right before they were waved out the door by Activision, Platinum Games made one DLC pack. This added free new weapons to loophole being the Dark Star Saber, the Golden Hunter, and and the Photon Disruptor, as well as free character costumes that only added one or two new lines of dialogue when selecting them in the main menu. These aren’t separate characters. They’re just skins, which means when going to the Proud Star, you don’t get any new unique dialogue, which is honestly a real shame. I feel like it would have added a lot, but once again, they were being waved out the door in 2015, so they couldn’t exactly make new content. The character costumes were Optimus Prime became a G1 inspired Nemesis Prime because Nemesis Prime was never in G1. It was an addition to the franchise in Red 2001 in Armada. Bumblebee became Goldfire because we illegally couldn’t call him Gold Bug anymore and Sideswipe became Red Alert. Listen, I love G1 Red Alert, but I kind of wish he became his forever Sun Streaker instead. And that does it for the DLC of all the Transformers games because we’re not going in microtransactions. Otherwise, we’d be here all day. Love you guys. I hope you enjoyed the video. And what? No, that one’s the worst. Don’t make me talk about that one. Fine, we’ll talk about Battlegrounds. Can’t wait to see the graph of everyone clicking off the video once I mentioned Battlegrounds. Transformers Battlegrounds, as you probably already guessed, is a colossal disappointment to the Transformers brand and just came out at the worst possible time when the fandom was at their angriest and most depressed. The Bumblebee movie came out and then for almost five years we didn’t get another Transformers live action movie because the execs were too busy fighting themselves whether it was a reboot or not. IDW2 just started and honestly a lot of people weren’t really vibing with IDW2 knowing that IDW would be losing the license soon and it just kind of felt like their new rebooted universe was rushed and all of the Activision Transformers games just got delisted and would go offline a year later. Yeah. So Transformers Battlegrounds, I woke up, I saw the trailer and then I checked the comments and everybody hated on it. And guess what? I also hate this game with a burning passion. This is supposed to be a turnbased tactical game, but this game has all the strategic complexity of buttering toast. And also, it just helps elevate the flavor of that beautiful grilled cheese. Take that out. Turn that over. Look. Originally, it cost $50, almost the same price as a modern AAA game at the time. Not to mention the story was garbage and it was set between season 1 and two of Cyberverse. And if you know anything about that show, season 1 was terrible. It felt like such a chore to watch. It actually hurts. And then I remember being at my grandparents like a year later and catching an episode of season 3 of Cyberverse during the Quintesson Invasion arc and I went, “Wait, Cyverse actually gets good?” Then I binged the whole series and yes, Cyberverse actually does get good. But don’t worry, this is the last Transformers game to actually feature DLC. First, we have the gold Autobot skin pack, which I swear is in every single Transformers game. I mean, I know the Golden Lagoon is a popular episode, but can you at least make the gold look good? Maybe it’s the lighting of them taking this picture, but a lot of the gold is really dark and doesn’t really reflect or shine or gleam. The Energon Autobot skin pack. Yeah, I know. This looks awful. They do this in the show, but they just desaturate every other color, put a blue filter over them, and it looks awful. The battle skin pack, honestly, that should have been called battle scarred or battle damaged, kind of like how Fortnite did. I mean, these ones are okay, but in my opinion, these should have just been in the base game. Like, if your health goes below a certain amount, your character starts looking more and more beat up and resembles these skins. That would have actually been dynamic and cool, but I guess they wanted to make a number $4.99. the Neon Autobot skin pack. If I were to buy and play this God Opel game and had to buy one of these skin packs, it probably be this one. Actually, doesn’t look too bad. And they really hit the neon effect. The Nemesis Prime and Goldfire Bumblebee skin pack. Honestly, I don’t hate this one too much. It’s like $3. And it’s really cool seeing Nemesis Prime and Goldfire in the Creverse art style. The Cube Arcade Mode add-on. So, we’re just selling gamers for $3.99. Is that it? Shattered Space Bridge. I’m pretty sure this is the game mode where you get to finally play as the Decepticons because you can’t throughout the entire game. But once again, this is just selling player choice and new game modes for $12 Canadian. Guys, the last good Transformers DLC was in 2015. If only someone could make a brand new DLC that’s actually good. [Music] Delicious. Finally some good fucking food. [Music]
