Atomfalls DLC is Fantastic!

I make no secret about how much I loved Atomfall when it dropped back in March this year. For me, it was the closest I’d felt to an experience similar to Bioshock since the second Bioshock. So, I jumped at the opportunity to jump back in with the Red Strain DLC. And while it was disorientating trying to refamiliarize myself with the gameplay style and world design, I still loved exploring a new slice of weird English countryside. The Red Strain offers a new area and new enemy types that most returning players will find all too familiar. In terms of variation, Red Strain doesn’t do anything to reinvent the wheel. The new enemy types are basically reskinned versions of the enemy types from the main game. And even the dangerousl lookinging red areas are just different colored versions of the dangerousl looking blue areas. Personally, that didn’t bother me because I loved the main game so much I was just happy for more of it. But it’s highly likely that anyone looking for something tonally different will be disappointed. It seems like Atom Falls post-launch content is trying less to be Point Lookout and more of a Broken Steel style edition. It’s unfortunate that both of Atom Falls DLC’s slot so casually into the main story’s experience because for anyone other than a new player, it does feel like a chore relearning old concepts. But that still barely dampened my overall joy at being able to jump back into Atomfall’s carefully crafted world. And the Red Strain DLC is just as carefully well-made as the base game. If you loved Atomfall as much as I did, you will no doubt find the repetitive nature and relearning curve worth putting up
