Ghost Of Yotei DLC, New Ghost Game, inFamous, Sly Cooper Or Something New…
What is Sucker Punch going to do next? Now that Ghost of Viote is out, we of course know that they’re going to do the multiplayer DLC next year. I want to look at the timeline. When can we expect that? And also look at what is beyond that. A single player DLC, another Ghost game, or are they going to return to Infamous Sly Cooper? Let’s get into it. But I already want to say don’t get your hopes up for Sly Cooper and Infamous. It’s wild to me that there are articles suggesting that they will do that. And I will tell you why that is wild in this video. So let’s get into it. We go to video game Chronicles. Sucker Punch will remain a single project studio after Ghost of Yote, which is nice for them because it means that they have 160 people right now at the studio working on Yote. They can keep the cost low. A budget of 60 million uh was the case for Yote and Sushima had 60 million as well. That game was in development for longer. So obviously the development costs are higher for Yote, but because they worked on it for four years or a little less, they could keep it low. And the game already sold 2 million, they’re already they are already profitable. It’s only going up from here. So they’re in a very good position. But of course, with them being a single project studio, it means that they can only do one project at a time. The truth is that whatever we do next, whether it’s continuing Ghost or going back to Sly, the decision is really more limited by again our cherishing of focus and time to iterate, which means that we really can only do one thing at a time. So, it kind of has to be your best idea, right? And that’s really clarifying. It’s not like there aren’t 15 good ideas, but you only get to do one. And by the way, you only get to do one about every five years. So, the choice is really important. I mean that is using your college and your major every five years. Okay, he like and that that’s why the articles are there, right? They’re saying okay or going back to sly dot dot dot. We also go over here to insider gaming. Sucker punch would love to work on more infamous but can’t. And the reason why they can’t I would love to do more infamous. I would love to see a trilogy re re-release but sucker punch is a one team at a time shop. And right now we’re very f focused on finishing Ghost of Yote. So this was obviously before Yote came out. I get why people want more Sly Cooper. I get why people want more Infamous. I in particular really like the Infamous series. Looking at Sony’s portfolio though. They have the Marvel stuff now. Infamous is never going to like sell as much as the Marvel stuff. They got the superhero stuff covered. But more interesting is going to this. And I’ve shown this a couple of times already because it just gives us an idea of what we are talking about. And that’s why I think it’s crazy that articles are suggesting that there is a world where Sucker Punch is going back to Sly Cooper. Okay, so we’re over here at recent era. The revenue and downloads for every Sony firstp party game ever released on the PSN as of June 2023. Okay, let’s we have 133. We see Ghost of Sushima here at number seven. So that that made like $215 million in lifetime revenue, which is insane. Uh and this is only includes the PS4 version, by the way. So this is the PlayStation store. It’s later released on PC. And of course, we have the Director’s Cut over here. Um here, Ghost of Shima Director’s Cut remaster. Another 66 million. And again, this 2023, two years, like they they sold more. So they made already on the PlayStation store 300 million dollars revenue from Ghost. And that is like they probably made 400 million all said and done. And the game had a budget of 60 million. That’s a ton of profit. Now, let’s look at Sly Cooper, shall we? Okay, so we have to scroll down. Scroll down. Oh, it’s not even in the 66 679. Ah, there it is. The Sly Collection. So, that’s the first mention of Sly. Sly Collection revenue $5 million. It sold 377,000 copies. Now, obviously, and that’s wild to say, this does not include physical. So for Ghost again the 400 500 million is probably where we’re going to land with PC maybe even more. Sly Cooper of course physical maybe it sold 500,000 copies in total and Sly 4 the they tried it. Of course uh Sucker Punch did not make that game but yeah they tried it 20 two 220,000 copies just to show you. and it made a revenue of $3.3 million on the PlayStation store. Just to show you what what we’re talking about here, having Sucker Punch off the board basically for a couple of years to make a Sly game that if they are lucky will sell 1 million copies is a waste of their time from from a Sony business perspective. They are never going to allow that. So them saying it in the interview is kind of stupid because they they know we are never going to make a slide game again. It does not make sense. Yote of course already selling 2 million. It will probably go and hopefully reach that 10 million mark that Ghost of Shima in the end reached with a PC release and maybe a PS6 re-release. It will happen. But Ghost of Yote sold more in one week than the Sly Collection and Sly 4 combined lifetime to put that into perspective. Okay, let’s look at Infamous. Game sold over a million units within 9 days. So this Infamous Second Sun and 6 million units by June 2019. Although I could not verify this. This is according to the Wikipedia page. But yeah, so that is like lifetime 6 million. We have Ghost of Sushima after the PC launch reaching 13 million. So that is double and again this is from a year ago. So it might be at 15 million now because I saw it like rising now that Yote is out as well. Basically in terms of business sense it would not be smart for them to go back to these older series. So again what are they going to do then? we know and I met uh Nate Fox, very very nice uh person, the creative director on Ghost of Yote and uh he was at a Dutch Ghost of Yote launch event and I asked yo is new game plus coming to Ghost of Yote and his PR answer was and that’s what what they always do. We’re currently focusing on Ghost of Sashim or Ghost of Yote Legends. So this is basically what they’re all focused on. Of course, a smaller team is working on the patches for Ghost of Yote. The majority is on Legends 2026, which is interesting because if we go over here, um, in August 17th, 2020, we learned about Legends coming to PS4 in fall 2020. It ended up being October. So, a month after launch, they announced the Legends multiplayer, which was a really big surprise if you remember that. We we did not see that coming which was very very exciting. And then three months later they launched it with new game plus. So if they would follow a similar timeline we would be looking at January 2nd. So of course it’s not going to be January 2nd that’s too close to new year but like early January. And I think that that’s perfect for Yote because in February March you already got a ton of other games coming out. So, if you can have a big like patch with new game plus and this multiplayer in January, I think that would do really really well. So, fingers crossed that that is what they’re aiming for. But yeah, that does leave Sucker Punch at the start of 2026 likely. I mean, right now they only said 2026. Again, I I hope it’s not taking them like half a year to finish the Legends mode, but we don’t know. Um, but basically early next year they’re going to start thinking about what is next. Probably as was what is always happening. We’re currently focused on this game. No, of course not. You need to have people that are making concept art to already figure out what’s like obviously they already know what they’re going to do next. And I think there are two directions. And I think if we get a DLC like the Iggy Island DLC, um the Icky Island DLC for if you don’t remember that was announced like a a year after launch and then it came out like a few months later. So, uh yeah, it came out a a year and a month after Tsushima came out, which is huge. They made it during COVID, so that’s pretty big. But uh I think if we get for Yote a DLC, I think that likely means that they’re going to do another ghost game. Why I say that is that because a lot of things that they added to the Icky Island DLC, they also used for the next game. So, I think how that works is that then also looking at the budget for the DLC, you’re basically already working on things that you can use in the next game. The horse armor where you can like charge into enemies was in introduced in the Eeki Island DLC. The bounty monster armor set was an armor set in the Eeky Island DLC. The true aim charm was an item in the Eeky Island DLC. the new game plus lightning strike charm was yeah already an item in Tsushima and now also in Yote basically they used a lot of stuff a lot of things they created for the DLC and post-launch content also for the legends modes and put it in Yote and I do think that that’s kind of how you make sure that you can like kind of toy around with the budget a bit right you’re you’re saying okay we are working on those things for the DLC but we can like spend that time and money on it because we will also use it on the sequel and the sequel obviously will have a way bigger budget. If they don’t do a DLC though if legends is going to be it then I don’t think we will get a new ghost game. So what is also interesting is that we heard about this sucker punch studio hat on ghost of yote series identity. We can’t imagine a ghost game in feudal Europe. We believe the core of ghost is someone wielding a katana. That’s part of the essence. We can’t imagine the ghost game set in say feudal Europe. That doesn’t make sense. There are plenty of games set there, but that’s not what a ghost game is. I don’t know. I love Ghost of Yote. I love Sushima, but I already think Yote is kind of is too similar for me in terms of the unlocks and the it’s like a a huge evolution of Tsushima in almost every way apart from the story. I I did like Jyn’s journey a bit more, but I am I’m fine with them moving on. If a ghost game for them means Japan again, means another katana wielding character. It’s likely going to be a new character, I’m fine with them moving on. And I’m all I also don’t need a a yote DLC. I No, I’m I’m fine. I’m I’m okay. I I think I I would rather them do something new again and then during the PS6 generation, maybe they will do a director’s cut. Like that is of course another wrinkle to this. They did the DLC to beef up the PS5 version. We know the PlayStation 7 or six. Damn. No, we’re not that far yet. Uh PlayStation 6 will launch in 2027. So a Ghost re-release would be 2028, which is like 3 years from now. I think that’s they might do it, but yeah, there there’s less of an incentive for them to do a DLC. I really hope next year they’re going to work on a brand new IP, not as a Sly Cooper, not Infamous because those games are not as big as Ghost, but whatever they do next because that is interesting. They still think of them even if they’re making the Legends DLC. Wait, I’m going to uh look up that uh quote. So, this interview from Game File, basically he does not expect Sucker Punch to become a multiplayer studio, even if they’re doing Legends. We are an openw world thirdp person character action game team. And look, I’m I’m down for a new openw world action game from them. And I’m okay to leave Japan behind because we have we have a many games now. And I also think that it’s it’s what’s going to be best for them for the PlayStation 6 generation to have a new IP from a sucker punch. So that’s what I hope.
