Yes you can I did this about a year ago with no issues. Got a replacement one on eBay.

OG Xbox didn’t marry the DVD-ROM to the motherboard. If you can find still replacements, look for anything that’s not Thompson brand (I think Philips and Samsung made drives for the OG). I went through so many Thompson drives back in the day, it was ridiculous.
