Missing a backplate and a battery, is there any reputable source to get replacements of some sort?

    1. You’re in luck. As the entire gimmick of the New 3DS is the exchangable plates, you’ll have no issue whatsoever to get an original backplate of your choice.

Well, as long as said choice is still available for cheap.

    2. What a steal! Easy way to get the battery is of Amazon, for a decent price, and a replacement shell to for cheap. Since it’s a N3DSXL, you can buy a max of 128gb of storage on a SD card, but format it to FAT32 so the DS can read it.

If you got it for $35, there’s a good chance there are problems elsewhere. If it were just the battery that was missing, the console would have sold much better.People are even taking advantage of it on consoles for parts. Apparently, motherboard problems are common on the New 3DS.
