Next week will be 1000 days since Tears of the Kingdom released, the longest gap in 3D Zelda history between the release of a game and the announcement of a new game.

Don’t get me wrong here, I want a new game too, but in the grand scheme of development times these days Zelda fans have been super lucky. We are far less lucky in my fandom of Elder scrolls or GTA…

u/thecornballer1 – Aren’t you forgetting that The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is a brand new game so that Statement is Nulled

    3. I choose to view this as a good thing.

TOTK and BOTW are amazing. Time to let them cook.

    4. This post is objectively wrong Echoes of wisdom and age of Imprisonment released after Tears of the kingdom

    5. And it better stay this way until the game is nearly ready. I don’t want another 4 years wait like Tears of the Kingdom.

    6. Definitely helps that Echoes of Wisdom came out in between as well as the Switch 2 upgrades, but it’s definitely a little disheartening thinking about how we’re probably at least two years out from the next title.

    7. 2026 is the 40th Zelda anniversary and the next week will be 1000 days since Tears of the Kingdom release as you said… and NatetheHate said that next week there will be a Nintendo direct…

I’m okay with that. We’ll probably get another HD release for the 40th anniversary, since they did SS for rhe 35th.

I want them to really cook with the next one. Take that physics engine they built and take advantage of the new hardware power.

Announcment of a new, mainline 3d Zelda game? Maybe. But we’ve had 2 Zelda games announced and released since.

doesn’t feel like it at all, but maybe that’s bc of all the other zelda releases, i wonder when we’ll get an announcement 2027? 28?

    11. Good. Announcing games that are half a decade away is something that shouldn’t exist anymore.

We don’t need an announcement, we know a new 3D Zelda is coming sooner or later.

    12. And as just so happens, 1,000 days since I excitedly bought it and fired it up, played for a couple hours, then never went back to it again until the Switch 2 update came out. Then I played it for 10 minutes, drooled at the 60 fps and envisioned playing it so much more…. and I still haven’t gone back to it.

    13. That means Tears came out 1000 days since my wedding day. I remember standing in line at my Target to get my copy and playing it that next day. Only questions is WHAT HOW HAS IT BEEN 1000 DAYS

    14. I know echoes of wisdom is in there, but even disregarding that, didn’t they announce totk super early compared to when it actually came out? Id rather they just wait awhile and announce it closer to release.

    15. Feels kind of arbitrary to pick 3D game gaps as a measure of anything. Sure there was a major gap between Metroid Prime 3 and 4, but we got Samus Returns, Dread, and even Prime Remastered, showing a healthy stream of releases for the Metroid franchise as a whole.

Zelda has likewise been just fine as a franchise and the gap from mainline 3D to 3D doesn’t signify anything. Echoes of Wisdom was great and had a lot of charm. Mainline AAA 3D games these days take more development time. It comes with the territory of wanting the envelope pushed with bigger, bolder, better every single time. That doesn’t happen every 2 years.

If you want to see how that doesn’t work, look at the rushed pace of Pokemon.

I’d rather wait with nothing released, than see a rushed idea/product. I remember Twilight Princess and BOTW being heavily delayed back in the day.

I’m still on my first play through of TOTK and started on day 1 of its release and I’m in no rush for a new game, keep developing whatever you’re cooking please!

Some people in the comments are being pedantic around OP’s wording. It’s widely understood that there’s two branches of mainline Zelda games: 2D/top-down titles like Link’s Awakening and Echoes of Wisdom, and 3D games like Ocarina of Time and Breath of the Wild. OP is talking about the latter.

If excluding Echoes of Wisdom from this bothers you, it may be better to consider the 3D descriptor as referring to movement in three dimensions, rather than two—and not to the game’s graphics.

I must be getting old.. it doesn’t feel like that long since tears of the kingdom to me. Wow.

    20. Let them cook, TOTK was not good enough. If they need time to innovate and flesh out the next world then so be it.

    21. Mysterious-Counter58 on

I don’t think Nintendo wants to leave another 4 year gap between announcement and release. That gap with TOTK was most likely owed to COVID anyways, as in the past 5 years or so Nintendo has taken to maybe a year or so gap between announcement and release at the most, with most games coming out within half a year or less from their initial announcement. The next mainline Zelda probably won’t be announced until 2028 at the earliest (beyond maybe a “yes, we’re working on it” mention from Aonuma), and probably won’t release until 2029-2030.

    22. ArgumentAny4365 on

Here’s hoping we get some actual Zelda games this time, versus whatever the fuck Breath/Tears were supposed to be.

    23. This ain’t the early 2000’s anymore. Games take a lot longer to make. There wouldn’t be a TotK in 2023 had it not build on the base of BotW.

    24. This is (breath of the) wild to me because it genuinely felt like the wait between Skyward Sword and BOTW was an eternity longer. It’s probably due to just how dry the Wii U era was and the fact that we got random, off screen recordings of Zelda U for so long before we finally got a trailer.

    25. My memory is horrible, but what was the last time a big anniversary for a game came around and we got exciting announcements? It feels like it’s always “thanks for X years, here are some games that are 30% off for a week, a new mobile game, an overpriced remaster, and a cool statue”

Again my memory sucks so please shout out the awesome anniversary reveals!

    26. I don’t understand why people disliked TotK so much. I went into expecting to hate it and absolutely adored it and the mechanics, not to mention all the new places to explore.

    27. MummyUnderYourBed on

Does Nintendo ever do what you expect or want them to do? I’m guessing no mention of Zelda in the direct and for the 40th anniversary, bare minimum finally releasing Wind Waker/Twilight Princess HD. Either that or nothing at all.
