3DS shuts off with a “pop” sound when opening the screen – Repair or replace?

Hi everyone,
I'm having an issue with my 3DS. Whenever I turn it on and open the hinge to a certain point, the console makes a loud "click/pop" sound and immediately shuts off.
I suspect it's a damaged ribbon cable in the hinge, but I’m torn on what to do. Given the current prices and the difficulty of this specific fix, is it better to get it professionally repaired or should I just look for another unit?
