I find that the C-Stick is in the perfect spot to allow for adequate (not amazing) camera control while being able to quickly access the action buttons. It’s a good compromise between accuracy and comfort and it lends itself well to how often you’re using it (not that often).
A second circle pad may have been more accurate but it is a bigger compromise in comfort. Try placing your thumb in the hypothetical area where it would’ve been, it does not feel like a natural resting position.

i feel like if nintendo added a second circle pad, it’d be above the face buttons, like the wii u, and it would probably be better than the c stick
try the cpad pro to see what it would have been like
I just realized they could’ve added another circle pad if they moved the start to the old location like with previous models. I wonder why they moved them in the first place.
A second circle pad could’ve absolutely worked, but it would’ve misrepresented the intent of the design and taken away from the switch. To clarify: A huge second circle pad would make it seem like the 3ds – 2 and insinuate that a lot of new games that utilise it would be released which was never the intent. It was a minor gimmick to sell more consoles around the end of the 3ds’s lifespan. The true successor to the 3ds was the switch (wii u came out before, but that was parallel to the 3ds). And the switch has two thumbsticks, which immediately shows it’s increased compatibility with modern games. Even with two thumbsticks, the 3ds wouldn’t have been able to run many modern games that rely on separate camera controls, so it might’ve also made people upset at the time.
terrible take. I mean the circle pad isn’t great but playing on the thor, dual analog sticks is a game changer
It’s not used much anyway, only case I could see for a second circle pad is maybe left handed people could’ve swapped which side of the controls controlled what, but they didn’t do that. Would’ve been a fairly niche implementation anyway. Also, off topic, but what theme is that on the 3DS in the picture?
