A potential Donkey Kong movie might come next WAY after the live action Legend of Zelda movie.

Try Tetris.
It would theoretically be possible to make a good movie, but it wouldn’t have much to do with the game.
Which is the case for many games or IPs.
Anything that’s at least somewhat story based is plausible though

There is a very long and very strong track record of video game movies being dog shit. People are right to be skeptical because they have been fed straight up aids for decades. The good ones are still the outliers, for now.

Its not lack of imagination. Its the incompatibility of the media. You can make an adaptation of any game, but some games are unable to trasmit their charm when brought to be a movie.
You can make a movie about dark souls, but you wont be able to share the actual frustration of trying a boss tenths of times that playing the game brings, nor the satisfaction of finally beating them.
You can make a portal adaptation and make glados as sassy as she is in the games, but you wont be able to trasmit the satisfaction of solving the puzzles, even less cheesing them.
You can adapt the story and epicness of devil may cry, but nor the coolness of doing yourself the combos.
The more story/visual oriented is a game, the easier it gets to adapt, but once the game is based more on the experience, it will probably loose its charm. Also, some artstyles are great for games, but would suck in a movie. Pixel art movies would feel weird, and many games have their charm in that artstyle. Or translating a franchise that only does 2d games into a movie where it will have to go 3d.
Also, some gameplay loop wont be able to fit in a movie. A roguelike, a extraction shooter, etc, will feel weird in a straight story
