Almost definitely nostalgia. And like I get it, Not gonna lie, I enjoy New super Mario Bros Wii more than super Mario Bros Wonder. But that has nothing to do with the quality of the game It’s just because I’m so familiar with the Wii game that every moment is comforting, while wonder’s creativity can be intimidating because it requires you to think more. I think Wonder is the better game overall and would probably vote for it in the pole but I understand how that could happen

Blind nostalgia.
I immediately know because people who played it as kids were unable to see the “New” in the title, and have never touched the game again to notice it.
And the game doesn’t come off as bland and unimaginative when it’s the first thing you’ve played ever.

1: Nostalgia
2: Wii lets you screw your friends over more easily than in Wonder

I feel like the sentiment flipped on Wonder a bit after release. It got a lot of fanfare when it came out, but when the hype died down lots of people weren’t into it after reexamination

NSMB Wii was a sequel to a loved game at a time period where 2D platformers were decently rare outside of handheld consoles. You rarely got them, for the most part, so there was not much to compare it to at the time. This was before DKC returns, before Kirby Return to Dream Land, etc.
Meanwhile, Wonder is released at a time where there are both indies and AAA 2D platformers that genuinely move the genre forward with interesting level themes, mechanics, level design, etc. Compared to something like Rayman Legends, DKC Tropical Freeze, Kaze and the Wild Masks, Sonic Mania, etc. Wonder is very underwhelming and safe. Not bad, but it still has the basic grass, water, jungle, etc. level themes, doesn’t do much new with the formula outside of the wonder seed, which just isn’t enough. The standards for a modern 2D platformer in the 2020s is so much higher.

I genuinely enjoyed replaying Wii more, but they’re both amazing
