when I try to take it off, it seems to bend the whole chassis and the upper display lid. almost like it is glued on there. I don't want to break anything, so I need to know if there is some sort of specific method to remove it.

Not really. I just find where the lip overhang bites and pull that away from the body. There will be a few points all over.
Maybe one of those device repair tools, or a guitar pick. Something thin. Not necessary but definitely makes it easy (-ier).
