I’ve had my 3DS XL for a over a decade with no issues. Then tonight, when I was done playing a game, I went to close it and felt some resistance alongside a strange noise.

Checked the corners and I saw the right corner but the screen hinge was cracked and it was preventing it from closing properly.

Then as I go to take pictures for this post, the part that was cracked actually breaks off. And now I think I can never really open it again or else it will fully break.

Is my 3DS finally done for? I know I can’t have it repaired anymore, but this is one of my favorite systems to play on and I have a ton of great games for it.

I need to know if this is serious or not, please let me know.

Nothing a bit of love and a new shell can’t fix, as always get someone to help you or take it to a shop if you’re not confident with repairs

Mines doing the same, same exact side and everything.. Hasn’t got to this point yet.. Honestly makes me want to leave it open and not move it too much.. Set it up on my desk like a mini laptop that’s always open.

Looks like its shedding its shell, this 3ds seems to be acting like a hermit crab, it just wants a new shell

    4. This break is unfortunately a very common issue with the original 3DS XL.

The proper way to fix this issue is to replace the bottom midframe of the system. And that requires a partial disassembly.

I recommend watching this video that displays the process.

If you’re (understandably) intimidated by the process, I highly suggest getting a hinged case for the system. The hinged hard case will act as a brace for the system so it will keep the top aligned and the ribbon cables intact.
