i got games for the system but my older model 2011 3ds broke long ago. been wanting to play my childhood back but heard that models of the 3ds are expensive. the new 3ds xl looks like the perfect fit for me. it's a shame getting it second hand seems to be a challenge.

What is reasonable to you? You could keep checking FB marketplace to see if someone is selling it for a price that works for you (beware of scams). You can usually find a listing for a Japanese new 3DS LL on eBay for around $200 USD which is the norm nowadays. Just mod it to remove the region lock.
