It's been in a clear case since I bought it and still looks basically brand new besides the dust. My friend says I should homebrew it or whatever the term is, but I'm not sure if I wanna ruin a gem like this. What do you guys think about that?

Homebrewing it wouldn’t ruin anything, it would make it much more usable in fact.
Depends if you want to play it more than you would with just your collection of game cards. You know, for those homebrew games and such.
~~If you have another ds you can homebrew then~~ maybe you would save this ~~special edition~~ one in original firmware condition. Either way, it wont hurt its value, again, as long you wanted to play it as much as possible. If you happened to have the complete box this would fetch a pretty penny on the market rn as is.
