I mean, think about it. When was the last time we got a general Nintendo Direct? All the while the things that are typically revealed in Nintendo Directs have been drip-fed to us on Nintendo Today over the course of the past few months.
I know, you might be thinking about how last year they did both, but in hindsight I feel like that was more-so testing the waters for this app. I still think we might get Directs for specific games, like a Splatoon Raiders Direct, but I think general Nintendo Directs are gone.

so deltarune is no longer tomorrow
We got two general directs after it’s announcement.
We’ll likely get a normal direct in June.
We don’t really know what nintendo has planned after yoshi besides rhythm heaven and splatoon….so a general direct there seems likely if you ask me.
(For example….we still don’t know when lego batman is releasing for switch 2….which could be announced in a general direct.)
Sigh yeah, it has limited them
nintendo has FORGOTTEN about directs…….
Genuine Nintendo Directs died along with Iwata.
They really haven’t announced anything new that’s major enough for a direct (nor enough), not since their last general direct and game specific promos.
For as much as people want to chart a pattern for Directs and similar Nintendo just tends to do its own thing. Let’s not forget there we want nearly whole year without Directs back during 2020. Granted it’s unclear how much of that was from Covid
It’s honestly baffling how overreactive people are and how quickly they forget the very recent past.
Not only have they done multiple directs after this app released, they never announced directs would be replaced by the app. Something you think they’d do because they’d want to keep the audience of their marketing and announcements as big as possible. Something that also wouldn’t make sense for them to do (replace video directs with the app) because videos are always a better marketing tool with a wider audience than an app people have to download and check manually because videos can be uploaded to multiple platforms simultaneously.
Big 2020 flashbacks.
I wouldn’t say Nintendo Direct is dead. It’s just really slow this year.
If 2020 did not kill directs, Nintendo Today also won’t.
And honestly I think they are right to diminish the number of general directs. People still remember Nintendo’s E3 in 2004 and Sony’s E3 in 2015. Do you know why? Because it was packed with games. And the reason for that is that they had 1 major presentation a year.
Every direct without a major Nintendo announcement is seen as a disappointment. So let’s have less directs with more content. If they need to announce anything that is not big that can’t wait for a direct, they can use the app.
2 general directs 6 months apart from each other and 2 Partner Directs + Indie World to fullfil the calendar would be perfect in my opinion.
I don’t think they have killed them but Nintendo is for sure in a period where they are testing the waters to see what they can get away with in regards to Nintendo Today. My impression is that Nintendo tries to avoid doing more than the minimum amount of directs because they are challenging productions to make and a coordination nightmare. Nintendo Today seems to be pretty low effort comparatively.
If I had to guess how things will go, I think Nintendo will find that big franchise announcements will do fine on Nintendo Today because it wont really matter where they are announced anyways. But games from less popular series may not get as much attention if they aren’t put in front of people’s faces in a direct. I doubt it’s anything more than a small fraction of the most hard-core Nintendo fans who even bother checking the app. Then, the announcements wind up in the sea of social media posts like everything else. Similarly, I think third party and indie games benefit from directs, especially general directs, because people come for the big Nintendo announcements but then get exposed to things they hadn’t anticipated. Kind of a rising tides raising all boats thing.
Or maybe not and Nintendo Today turns out to be the most effective way for them to market. I would guess not though, considering directs have been so immensely successful that the format has essentially become the standard for most companies both in the games industry and elsewhere.
I think we’ll get themed directs now focusing on a single game or franchise like we’ve been getting so far this year.
It’s the only line of thinking that’s giving me hope we’re getting another fire emblem direct for fortunes weave seeing as there’s been no marketing. We got one before when the switch was announced but games were still primarily coming out for the 3DS.
Directs make me yawn tbh
That’s just… REALLY god dang stupid dude. 🤦🏾♂️ Considering what the app’s consisted of, this has done everything BUT kill Nintendo Directs. It’s even more asinine in itself since we’ve had a Direct just a COUPLE MONTHS AGO! Are you for real with this BS here?
We really haven’t gone THAT long without a direct. People need to chill out and let Nintendo decide when they feel they have enough to show.
They’re getting through their current slate of already announced games/projects before announcing a bunch of new things. I bet we’ll get a general direct in June.
Nah. We still have yet to get a brand new game reveal through Nintendo Today.
I think they’re just using it to keep us up to date on stuff already announced. Come may or june, I’d be shocked if we still don’t get a general direct.
