“That’s a difficult question because each ending holds its own significance and meaning.” They pondered, “It’s not about one ending being more correct than the others; it’s about the player’s choice.”

“When developing the story initially, Mr. Kim viewed the world from a more pessimistic perspective. This was during a tough period in his life. He envisioned the true ending as humanity being completely replaced by a new civilization.”

“However, after overcoming those challenges, he came to believe that every ending has value and is right in its own way. If the story continues in a sequel, he might have to choose one of these endings to build upon, but he doesn’t know yet which it would be. It’s something that will be determined in the distant future.”

    1. for people who keeps trashing on colony ending, director kim’s initially developed the game with this ending in mind – hence this is why in my opinion, the ending makes more sense and fleshed out. that being said, both endings are definitely valid and lets hope for a next sequel with their success

I hope they discover real humans, who managed to go out of radar and survived. Otherwise the story would become more restrictive.

But I am mostly hyped for eve’s and raven’s reunion and maybe a temporary alliance to fight MS.

Either way I do both ending in single playthrough. Backup save.

    4. I haven’t quite finished the game yet, but I am a little bit disconcerted about the apparent lack of a ‘good’ path forward. Adam/Raven and the Mothere Sphere are both monstrously evil—though at least the latter created some hotties.

No respectful gamedev is going to call their fanbase ‘wrong’ or ‘stupid’. There’s no point to that.

The Colony ending rings hollow, since neither Eve nor Lily do anything with all the revelations they had on their travels. Mother Sphere simply wins, sending all Andro Eidos to the Earth to become the new humanity after successfully killing everyone. Even the ending credits line points to it saying “The journey to find the truth continues” in the Colony ending because choosing that ending means you’re denied the truth.

That said, if we go a bit meta, if they want the next game to be dark and depressing, then yeah choosing the ‘bad ending’ would be the right path. A world where humans no longer exist like Nier Automata.

    6. Well… I’d agree that going through a though period in your life would make you pessimistic enough to think that wiping humanity and have it replaced is the right choice, when there’s another choice around the corner that have you trying save both species.

Is pretty much saying that one lost faith in humanity so it’s okay for all of them to die. Happy he did overcome his challenges and has a more positive perspective of the world.

That being said, it kindof re-confirms that Return to the Colony is indeed the bad ending. Whether they decide to use it or not for the sequel, time will tell.

This is how I see the ending (my opinion)

Cost of lost memories – bad ending

Making new memories – good ending

Return to colony – alternate (neutral) ending

Such a cool boss fight there’s no way that was the “bad” ending

Seemed like the Colony ending had the most thought and planning put into it to me, makes sense that it was the first planned ending.

Glad to see that they’re leaving it up in the air for now, so everyone can chill with the “Bad/ Good/ CANON!” ending talk.

I’m not the biggest fan of open ended choices tbh but despite Making New Memories being the obvious better ending to follow up, I’d love if they pull a NieR and continue the endings in spin offs.

What is next for Mother Sphere when Eve and Lily return and what’s the plan for the future now with Adam gone? With Adam gone (fused) and Lily dead, how can Eve defeat the rogue Mother Sphere alone? What is next for Eve after becoming Xion’s new protector and how will Mother Sphere be defeated?
