It’s not discussed as much as other reasons for the Wii U failing, but I think the 3DS family really hurt the Wii U.
If you wanted to play Nintendo games that gen, you could pick up a 3DS family system for the fraction of the cost of a Wii U, still get to play games like the newest Smash Bros, while enjoying a large library of Nintendo and third-party games, many of which were exclusive or better represented on 3DS.

Because the 3DS was the infinitely better device but this is a Nintendo sub where we exclusively jerk off the Wii U while dunking on the Switch so nobody wants to admit it 🤷♀️
