,Xbox at least knows how to preserve by making the newest systems backwards compatible to play all the 360games.

    1. Not, all, Xbox 360 games can be played on the newer gen, only some. Also, last time I checked, I didn’t see a CD-ROM on my Switch to put a Wii U/Wii game into. So, I guess, no? I am not rockin wit what u sayin.

I emulate games all the time but also it’s pretty clear why a company like Nintendo would be against it.

Also, I’m pretty sure that the majority of people emulating games aren’t playing obscure games that aren’t available anywhere. Most of them are probably playing games that are available but just don’t want to pay for them.

    3. The vast majority of first party titles are available on NSO. They were available on Virtual Console before that. I’ve been hearing this “refusing to port or sell” bullshit since 2011ish, it’s a stupid argument when most of these games ARE still officially available in a digital form.

    4. > Don’t pirate our old games” “Ok,then sell them to me” “No.and how dare you ask”

I mean they literally are with NSO. I love it when people scream “game preservation!” and then complain when NSO adds “bargin bin games no one asked for.” Especially when they were games that weren’t even releases on back on the Wii Virtual console.

If Sony consoles were as easily hackable/emulatable you better believe they would be going after them like hawks.

Nintendo supported grey brick gameboy games on real hardware until like 2008, virtual console on wiiu and switch online games both are preserving old games, I think they have a similar track record to xbox. Xbox just hasn’t started going after roms yet. I’m mad that vimms got hit too but for real man Nintendo has a really good track record on having old games on new hardware

Nintendo doesn’t have to port them or put the on NSO for you. They can all be found on eBay. Don’t act like the games aren’t available legally.

They aren’t obligated to sell you anything just because you want them to.

      😂

Who the hell is dumb enough to listen to ordinary gamers talk about nintendo. That’s like listening to drake talk about Kendrick right now, he’s just a damn loser and doesn’t know what he’s talking about

This is a pretty ignorant take. Nintendo has every right to protect and preserve their IP and is under no obligation to inform the public of their plans or intentions. As seen with recent releases of games like Sunshine, Pikmin 2, Metroid Prime and Thousand-Year Door, they strategically re-release their legacy titles to generate sales.

Consumers may not like that games they love and want to play are not available outside of resell / emulation, but again, Nintendo is a business, and they are financially incentivized to protect their content library and preserve value.

    10. At the end of the day, a company has the right to protect its IP. They’re not obligated to allow people to freely download and play emulated games that would be in violation of their rights as the IP holder.

Nor are they obligated to make all of their old games available on every one of their devices in some way, shape, or form. Nowhere have I seen Nintendo go “Fuck you, we’re not republishing (insert old game here)!”. Typically, it’s just a matter of demand. If there’s very little demand for a specific old game to be added to one of their official services or remade or ported, then they’re not going to waste the resources.

I understand the frustration, but I think it’s wild that people have such vitriol for a company that’s doing things that are well within their rights as the holder of the IP. That’s not “evil”, that’s not “bad”, that’s just normal business stuff.

    11. I’ve never cared what Nintendo thinks, if I bought a game once then I can play that game however I want even if it is on emulator with a downloaded ROM. I have never downloaded or emulated games from a current Nintendo console, if I can buy it then I’ll buy it but otherwise I will download.

    12. I really like being able to play any videogame ever.  It’s great.

Nintendo is well within their right to withhold sales as long as it’s not done discriminately.  Everyone is.  If a singer hates an old song they wrote, they should be allowed to stop selling it and to tell people not to duplicate it.  If you make a little video that people buy and then you grow up some, and you dislike that video, you’re within your rights to no longer sell it and to forbid others to sell it.

That’s not totally what’s happening with Nintendo in case of most of these games though.  9/10 they are just making sure there is a presedence that they protect their copywrites.  They want to make money off their products, but they can only do so much; they do their best to do it the most effective way possible; and they have a reputation to uphold.  They are in their rights to use their copyrights to the best of their ability, and what you’re seeing is a side effect of it.

Sorry it’s slightly harder for you to play the games you want to play.  There are lots of good games out there

    13. TyleNightwisp on

You sound like a kid throwing a tantrum. Nintendo has every right to take these games down, it boggles my mind how people will do their mental gymnastics to argue they shouldn’t.

    14. Nintendo’s stance on piracy is “you are breaking the law by distributing and downloading our copyrighted materials without paying for them, we will take action to prevent this”.

Just because they no longer sell games from the 90s gives you the right to pirate their games. They’re their IPs, they can do what they want with them. You can’t.

I’m not putting a moral stance on this btw, I am… *privy* to sailing the seven seas, but I’m not so petulant to cry over Nintendo protecting their games.

    15. Yeah, not gonna watch OrdinaryWhiner for that. While you can definitely criticise Nintendo for some decisions and actions they take, he is entitlement personified basically wanting every game for free. And let’s be real, the majority doesn’t care about preservation but playing games for free.

    16. The problem is people pirating the current games. If people exclusively were ripping roms of third-party games from the 80s that aren’t on NSO, Nintendo probably wouldn’t blink.

But like they say, one bad apple will spoil the bunch. Millions of copies of Tears of the Kingdom were reportedly downloaded illegally, and that’s what gets Nintendo going after piracy. They have to protect their current IP and that means it all has to go.

    17. If you sold something and made a living off of that sold item, and people stole that sold item, you’re telling me you wouldn’t be pissed?

    18. If you don’t have every Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, N64 ROM already saved in your Roms collection on a flash drive or hard drive already… you don’t deserve to emulate… just saying.

    19. sure it’d be nice if Nintendo could port these games, but the parroted sentiment that you are somehow obligated to be provided services if they don’t want you stealing is absolutely moronic.

I’m not even against piracy, I’m against this new culture of moral grandstanding and seeking of validation for pirating, instead of just shutting up and pirating on the down low like people used to. especially this crying and whining about how companies taking measures to prevent piracy is somehow immoral or wrong.

if you truly care about preservation, and are not just using it as an excuse, then push for nintendo releasing old games instead of pushing for nintendo to be lenient on piracy.

      >Xbox at least knows how to preserve by making the newest systems backwards compatible to play all the 360games

“xbox knows how to preserve” lmfao. they are doing by far the most damage to video game preservation. from their closing of their entire physical division, most probably stop selling physical games altogether in the future, pushing for the all digital consoles, pushing the gamepass subscription model where you don’t even own the games.

    20. AtsignAmpersat on

Preservation should be up to the people that give a shit about it. You can’t force someone to give a shit about preserving their own shit and it’s not crazy for them to be against people just pirating their stuff (which is exactly what happens with Nintendo games old and new). I hope people are preserving Xbox games on their own. What happens when Xbox decides it’s not worth it anymore? You can never count on a corporation to do anything forever.

    21. MonochromeTyrant on

Some of you are more interested in making mountains out of molehills than you are in the solution and acting on said solution, especially when the supposed problem isn’t actually a problem. Posting in this manner isn’t going to bring the website back, nor is it going to magically change Nintendo’s (or anyone else’s) opinion on piracy. Alternatives exist, use them.

    22. Archival and backup of ROMs isn’t illegal. Distribution and profit off of them is. And whether you still need money to keep some archiving servers operating, the moment you ask for money as a cooperation is when you technically set your bomb on a timer.

The audience may think it’s shitty, but it’s true. And while Microsoft might be a bit better, it isn’t the do-all, end-all solution because even now their archived catalog is a minimum percentage of their entire OG and 360 catalogs, especially if you don’t own a console with a disc drive like the Series S. You’re not offered the chance to, say, buy Sneak King or the original Sonic & SEGA ASR because you simply aren’t offered the option to.

    23. Entitled brat, Nintendo doesn’t own you anything. I know you are on summer break, so do something more useful
