As I've grown older, and my resentment for streaming platforms along with it, I've always found a value in purchasing media outright. I understand that I'm probably in the minority in that regard, particularly with my comfort in purchasing said media through digital platforms. I usually prefer physical media in some cases, but I generally find a lot of appeal in keeping movies and games centralized to a single box, just means less things to carry with me, and space is something I can only afford so much of.

I've still got movies and shows linked to my account which remain accessible today on my Series S and PC, that I purchased over 15 years ago on my 360. And nowadays, it feels like the console is truly a 'Game Pass' box. They're not even selling movies and shows through the Store app on PC. I know a lot of folk rather their consoles be explicitly purposed towards games, and I don't wholeheartedly disagree with that notion, but I've always been on board with the idea of an Xbox being an all-in-one entertainment system, despite their abysmal 2013 presentation which sold it like dog water lol. Being able to consolidate everything into a single box just means less clutter in the living room for me. I play predominantly on PC nowadays, but my console served well for movies, TV, and playing with friends visiting.

Linked image was just a funny graphic that held a permanent place at the back of my mind for over a decade, which held slight relevance to this subject.

You used to be able to watch Sky TV on Xbox 360 with your friends’ avatars on a couch. I wish you could still do that 😥

I’m not trusting them again after they stopped the first time. I decided to put my faith in Apple for my digital purchases now.

    3. Well there is the Apple TV app now. And Apple is far more reliable and caring for digital purchases and upgrading purchases too

    4. Nah, theres apple, amazon and youtube where u can buy movies, and they are accessible across more devices easily

      No point

This why we take to the high seas!

Whether is a platform or the rights holder. All is available to those who dare to brave the waves!

      Not something I ever used.
At most I used Netflix on my Xbox360 and Xbox One for a short time. And that was only because I didn’t have a smart TV.

Then again, I don’t use streaming services.
I have Amazon video which I barely use, and I only have it because it’s included in my overall Prime subscription.

    7. No, because “buying” digital movies and series is a giant scam as far as I’m concerned. It’s the only area where the widespread fear around digital purchases – your license just disappearing – has actually come true already on a significant scale sometimes (e.g. Discovery content purchased via Sony).

To “buy” a digital movie and then have it be locked to one platform/ecosystem for no technical reasons (that do exist with video games) is just a rip-off IMO. In contrast: If I buy digital music on bandcamp/amazon/whatever, I get a file with which I can do whatever the hell I want, I don’t need to use the respective specific app in order to be able to access my purchase. It should be the same way with movies and series, and if not, the digital license should be *vastly* cheaper to make up for it.

    8. I basically only used it to redeem reward points when my girlfriend and I wanted to rent a movie, but yeah, I miss it. I hate when companies remove options from their products, and being able to actually download content was nice.

It’s moves like this that made me shift to self hosting my own content. HBO removing their own content from HBO Now was the last straw. Increasingly, what consumers want doesn’t matter, especially when there’s shareholders to please.

    9. I do

They had *really* good deals pretty damn often.

Actually grew a sizeable catalog of movies and shows on Xbox over the years just because they kept having good deals. It’s great I can still watch them, but the way they ended it rather abruptly was just stupid and only makes me lose even more trust in MS.

    10. Not unless they make the app available on non Microsoft devices, it’s the entire reason it died off to begin with

    11. Can’t say I have any strong desire. Some decent deals but nothing groundbreaking that wasn’t available elsewhere.

Never really used it to watch anything. Only bought things that would port to movies anywhere because I did want to trap anything to my Xbox/PC.
