I really wonder what games he’s talking about, or what he’s noticed this trend from.

Not sure if off topic but I reeeeeally feel this way about Pikmin 4. Like 90% of songs there don’t even have a melody.

I kind of see where he’s coming from. I’m taking what he’s saying as more of a “games used to have a much bigger sense of individuality” in their soundtracks. You could identify the Luigi’s mansion theme from literally the first note. Modern soundtracks are very ‘competent’ but not overly memorable. Melodies used to be these iconic earworms.
You even see this in remakes. Paper Mario TTYD has an incredible unique soundtrack, and the remixed songs are still great, some better than the originals, but it loses a lot of its unique sound in the switch to a more orchestral execution.
*I got a reddit content warning from putting the word ‘Luigi’ in this post.

Man, im replaying Descent 1 and the music slaps and fits… meanwhile newer games just…have no soul in music… not all mind you but a fair number.

Who? Words for filter.

I do find some irony in him saying this since he composed Danganronpa 1 soundtrack without knowing the specifics because he wanted to play the game after it released.
