I expected him to be extremely involved in some capacity because he’s been ambiguous about his own intentions from the start. A lot of games are trying to do some plot twist to the point where actual villains can’t be just villains so I find myself thinking that even the drink cans would suddenly turn as villains. It’s an annoying trope with souls-likes. It was nice to see Eve at least questioning things even midway through the game but she knew for anyone to tell her the truth, she would need to progress.
