January 28, 2026  OSAKA (Kyodo) — The Nintendo Switch is slated to become the most popular console sold by Nintendo Co., likely to surpass the Nintendo DS.

The success of the Switch, which has sold 154.01 million units compared to 154.02 million of the DS as of the end of September 2025, has come with the release of a wide range of popular games, including the Super Mario franchise. The company's older consoles Gameboy and Wii have sold over 100 million units each.

"The successes (of the DS and Switch) are a result of developing works that make the most of the features of gaming consoles, as well as an accumulation of ideas centered on how consumers want to play games," said Katsuhiko Hayashi, the head of Famitsu.

Nintendo released the Switch 2 in June 2025, selling 10.36 million units as of the end of September.

The company is expected to release the units sold as of the end of December on Feb. 3 along with its quarterly earnings results.

    1. If they had price cuts I’d consider getting a Switch Lite for my kid, but the days of console price cuts are over apparently

    2. I still remember the promotional ads for it before its release and everyone memeing on them for having a portable and TV set based console and that it would be the death of Nintendo

    3. True, I only owned 2 DS’s (wife and mine), but Nintendo switch, we have a lite, 3 regular, and a switch 2.

    4. I mean, at this point we can say without any concerns it the most sold console ever whatever sony tried/try to make up.

    5. LunarWingCloud on

It was just 10,000 behind the DS back at the end of September. It’s an incredibly safe assumption, no one is sounding smart with this observation

    6. I really didn’t think anything would pass the DS, but it makes sense especially with how well the catalog has aged. Since I got the Switch 2 I’ve spent so much time playing Switch 1 releases that I missed because I was sick of my Lite.

    7. Chances are it surpassed NDS by the time last quarter results were announced. By now, it may well be the new king of the hill with the PS2 stats (by which I mean non-memetic stats😏) tangibly behind.

    8. Kinda weird that this site is reporting this now? Why not wait until it’s official in less than a week when we get new numbers?
