Longtime Nintendo fan here! I’ve never owned any DS model in the past (last handheld I had was the GBA). Any suggestions on games to play, and whether it is a smart idea to mod a special edition console?
I was so happy to see that the 3DS community is still alive and strong despite Nintendo’s support retirement.. happy to be here in 2026!!

Despite it being pricy due to scalpers, Tomodachi Life is a classic amongst those who like taking care of small communities! Fighting wise, I’d say Fire Emblem Fates Birthrights is my favorite rn (also mildly new to the 3ds community), and would recommend getting Fates Revelations since almost all characters are datable in it (if thats important to you). Of course, theres Mario and Legend of Zelda and what have you, so its really up to what you’re into :3
Most Atlus RPGs are great.
Again most square games are also great.
Fantasy life and Rune factory 4 are loved games.
Cant go wrong with fire emblem.
If you like battle network look into the starforce series.
Idk if can go on for days.
I mean, I don’t think the modding matters (as someone who hasn’t yet modded any of their own consoles). You should do whatever makes it more enjoyable for you. My most player games were the Pokémon games and Animal Crossing. Some of the virtual console games for Pokémon as well (which now you can only get through mods). Never did Smash since I had a Wii U and it wouldn’t make sense to buy all the DLC again.
