Digital Foundry: Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on Switch 2: Ambitious Port, Smart Cuts

    1. Owning a PS5 and a Switch 2 and playing mostly my Switch in the last months, even games like AC Shadows and Star Wars Outlaws, I found that I don’t really care about the compromises. I’m just glad I can play those games handheld and switch between docked and handheld on a whim.

    2. Rebirth is essentially unplayable on the steam deck. Even at 30 fps 720p medium, it’s blurry and fuzzy. Even on my 4080S, the game struggles to maintain 60fps ultra with lots of dips. But if they manage to do 4k30 that looks as good as remake I think that’s genuinely one of the greatest gaming optimizations in recent years

    3. From what I’ve seen and read from the article, it’s looking very similar to the PS5 performance mode, at 30 fps / 720p (Seems to be upscaled to 1080p with DLSS) and some cuts that aren’t that noticeable unless you directly compare.

I’m wishing to see some gameplay in the future to see how well it holds up in real time.

    4. Playing through Remake now and it’s absolutely amazing so far. Looks great and runs smoothly. If Rebirth is overall the same I’ll probably play it on switch 2. Part 3 will probably run great if it’s being developed alongside the main game

    5. Been playing remake Intergrade the last couple of days as well as other games like Cyberpunk. The switch 2 can run these games perfectly fine. As long as no content is cut I see no problems with the cuts they make.

    6. I absolutely love my Nintendo switch 2, but I’m not sure I will ever play a visually demanding game on the platform. I’m used playing some games at 90 to 120 FPS, and at a bare minimum 60 FPS, and it’s really hard to go down to 30 on a 3D game.

I don’t really care if it’s a 2-D game or an isometric game, and so many of the handheld friendly games play at 60 frames per second anyway.

I really think the best bang for the buck with the switch 2 is for them to pump out patches which increased performance on older titles.

I’ve said it before but Squeenix really doing some voodoo getting this to run at 10 watts.
