The first 6 days of Fever were amazing. Instant matches in any mode (singles or doubles, fever rackets or not), and people were reasonably happy with the game. Some mechanical changes from Aces are certainly questionable and make the game feel less precise in comparison – and DK/Petey need nerfs – but overall, I think the Mario Tennis community as a whole was enjoying the game!
Then, 6 days in, Camelot decided to activate a region lock. Up until that point, online ranked matchmaking was completely unlocked – I, as an EU player, could play with NA, Japan, or anyone else from across the globe. In the eyes of most of the competitive community, this was the best thing about Fever. Aces had region lock right from its launch, so upon Fever’s release, it was SO fun to be able to play ranked against foreign friends, having not been able to do so in the previous game!
Now, since the lock, it’s already becoming harder to find games. The singles modes are alright at active times of the day, but the doubles modes are really struggling. Players are already resorting to using VPNs just to get matches. I don’t know a single player who is happy with the regions being locked – most people reported perfectly fine connection even with regions very far away from them. In addition, east coast NA cannot match with west coast!
Giving us 6 days of beautiful activity and then taking it away just seems cruel. They didn’t even announce the region lock – they just did it with no communication, and who knows if they’ll ever reverse that decision. I do know that the ranked modes of the game won’t last much longer if they don’t 😞
TLDR: rantrantrant let us play the game ffs
edit – Hooky’s video here is a great summary of the situation!

Ive yet to play it online. Strictly a solo or with friends game for me as with all Nintendo properties. So for me its still running strong and will be a core party game to break out even after I finish it solo.
On the east coast, and I’ve run into empty lobbies in casual play.
I’m on east coast and it is not easy to find people to play doubles. It also sucks that I can’t play with my friends that lives overseas. Very disappointed.
because it $70 for a shitty tennis game. people who got fucked laat gen by their sports titles arent falling for it again.
They need to stop building the Mario Sports titles around the online mode. I used to love all of them, but I haven’t bought one since Strikers on Wii. I **loved** the base gameplay of Aces, but the lack of content outside the online mode killed it for me and I never bought it. An online mode is a great addition, but it shouldn’t be the main focus.
Edit: WTF, how did this post get so many upvotes? It had like 10 last night, woke up to 650+ and over a dozen notifications.
They really need to put this game on sale tbh. $70 is way too much for most people to justify a Tennis game, even though it’s one of the best in the series, plus it will help populate it for the people like us who *did* pay full price.
How was the netcode?
That’s what you get for releasing a game with no content and price it at 70
So you can’t play with friends ?
Games cost too much. It’s easy to pick out Mario tennis as a game to skip so you can get others.
Shame. This isn’t like Mario Kart where it’s guaranteed to be played by everyone. World’s lobbies are pretty much still full no matter what time.
If the game was 40 bucks I’d buy. Never touching it at its price
$70 is too expensive especially when you have the likes of RE9, the Leaf Green and Fire Red and then Pokopia. All of a sudden if you didn’t buy Tennis Fever at launch it’s quickly dropping down the list of games I wish to play.
the first problem is it’s 70 bucks lol
Pricing people out
Wtf why did they region lock it?? I remember playing the first few days then I took break to play backlog
They gotta start putting more into these games it’s as simple as that. The treat the sports games almost like mini games but then charge afull fat price it’s never gonna work out well.
Why play Mario when I can now be a ditto?
I wouldn’t mind getting the game, but when switch 1 games were $79.99 and this game is $99.99 (CAD) and adding to that Nintendo games rarely going on sale. I just cannot justify it for that price. If it was like half, like the Mario V DK remake or Metroid prime remaster sure. But not that price.

Imo this type of games dont need more content, just a lower price
I dont understand why the Mario Sports game are handled so poorly. There is so much potential in them. Same with the latest Mario Strikers.
I love real life pickleball and old Mario Tennis games and I decided not to get Mario Tennis Fever for now… cheap later? sure
It’s expected. The same thing happened with Aces and with the latest soccer game.
I love Mario sports titles, but I know every time the community is going to die off insanely fast cause there’s no real longevity/content to the games.
Aces wasn’t even good. I barely even played it. So why would anyone want to pay $70 for the same sub par game.
What is the rationale behind region locking online play? That doesn’t make any sense to me
This game is ass, I’d rather play the game boy version
$70 for a sports game I will wait for a discount like at least $29 max don’t think its worth more than that I still need to spend more time in aces anyway.
This is the importance of voting with your money. Nintendo has been riding on easy mode for too long now. The more they get punished doing things we don’t want in various forms the more they will start to care again. They know Mario sports is a lazy cash cow. I didn’t buy it. Not because I can’t afford $70 I have a lot of money, but because you could tell a mile away they threw in a lazy tutorial “story” and added some rackets + characters mostly already done before but made the roster bigger and tried to sell it as this exciting new game.
Make a genuine Tennis RPG story like the GB/GBA, keep the new gimmick whatever, create some new game modes, more maps, keep the big roster, a good online experience, and you’re good to go. It’s really not that hard
Yeah they burned their bridges on the sports games being online focused.
Actual cave brain thinking on their end. All they had to do was add a selection like MK8.
Why can’t you play ranked doubles with your pals is what I want to know. Nintendo always have to leave something out that anyone else who makes games would put it in without thinking
Region locking really killed off any momentum the online had. You could find matches very quickly, but now you either play against the same 4 people or get a communication error. Fingers crossed Camelot removes region locking in a future patch, if that even happens….
Unfortunately the game is a step down from Aces in gameplay and for a multi-player game that is what keeps it alive. Aces still has an active online scene and a discord with seasonal tournaments. The single player content is over blown and the first 2 hours are all tutorial based. I beat the story mode in like 3+ hours on launch day then beat all the cups and challenges within another hour or so. The unlocked trial tower is a nice touch and has a couple of fun and unquie ones but seems like filler for the most part as several challenges are repeated but on a new stage. It reminded me of battle league where the only single player was the cups and I beat them on launch day within a couple hours so only ranked was left to grind and since the gameplay was inferior to super and charged my appetite to grind was low and left me feeling luke-warm on the game.
That said, the region locking killed the game. Its very reminiscent of MK world patching out the 3 lap exploit in stage select. Another personal gripe is having no record on ranked, every online game is headed or already there at hiding scoreboards or putting win/loss records private or not at all in favor of a nebulous score that goes up and down with losses. (I am a Nintendo fan boy and bought this game and will buy the next mario sports game but i was very disappointed with this entry as I feel Power tennis had more content (more cups more difficult CPUs) and fever had deeper systems more fun and faster gameplay).
Yeah I traded it in a week after purchase
Just pick up Aces. It’s the same game.
Why on earth would they region lock the online?! What an asinine decision.
Yeah. Because it’s a 90 dollar tennis game
“Variable Pricing”
Make. Sluggers.
Yeah, well… Most gamers aren’t willing to pay $70 for it.
They need to stop making sports games in general. Theres only so much you can do when your locked into very basic sports.
region lock? wait you guys were playing against people from far away?
were the matches even playable with high ping?
because as you said, you were playing against people from other countries
Didn’t even know it was out
