Don’t know enough about console production to know what this means for the release date. Does that indicate a Fall 2027 or 2028 release?

“Microsoft “VP of Next Generation” Jason Ronald is talking about a topic near and dear to many gamers’ hearts: the future of Xbox. Ronald says the next Xbox, codenamed Project Helix, will have a custom AMD chip with “an order of magnitude increase in raytracing performance” up to and including path tracing, and a next-gen version of AMD’s FSR upscaling technology that relies on machine learning and includes frame generation for the console. But don’t expect it soon: Microsoft will begin sending out “alpha versions” of Project Helix to developers in 2027, Ronald revealed here at GDC.”

Wait, am I hearing this right? They’re gonna release more back compat games this year?

Doesn’t mean anything to people outside of Xbox and those getting the dev kit for the next xbox.

He said nothing about the console itself; he was talking about the XDKs. And you don’t need the XDK to start creating games for the next console.

I’m fine with Microsoft goin full next gen, that’s fine.
But what about current gen? What’s the incentive for devs to keep targeting Xbox, the console?

Can anyone in product manufacturing explain what an alpha means for a project? The game definition doesn’t really make sense in terms of a physical product.
A game reaching alpha, by definition, means the game is playable from start to finish regardless of final animations, models, textures, and feature sets being in place. Beta means (iirc) that the games feature list has been defined and no new features will be implemented. Reservist the start of optimization for final release

To add some context. They were shipping alpha version of Scorpio to their first party teams in November 2016. 2027 is still possible.

Makes sense. They just started testing changes to Win11 recently for the next console. The OS itself is still at least a year away from what they have planned which is almost a complete re-write of the backend.

In the article, Jay Peters quoted Jason Ronald who is the VP of Next Generation at Xbox, “We’re bringing the best of Xbox to Windows itself” when talking about the Project Helix playing PC games.
I noted three main thing here –
1. This comment is before the article talks about Xbox Ally and hence is likely only applicable to the next Xbox
2. This choice of words suggests Xbox OS is being incorporated into Windows somehow. He didn’t say we are bringing the best of Windows to Xbox, which means they are not incorporating Windows into Xbox OS.
3. While Xbox OS is based on Windows, Microsoft/Xbox have never called the operating system on Xbox to be Windows. Whenever anyone at Microsoft/Xbox has ever said Windows, they mean the general purpose operating system they license to OEMs.

Good stuff, I feel like I still got a good few years left with my Series X before I need anything else

To be honest, both PlayStation and Xbox didn’t make the full use out of this generation. This could easily be released in ‘28-‘29

I remember people saying that it would launch this year lol

RDNA5/UDNA won’t be available until H2 2027 iirc, so no surprise.
